Chapter 1: Introduction Disclaimer: I do not own "Romeo and Juliet"

The sounds of the streetcars outside of Paris's apartment made it impossible for him to doze off. The city that never sleeps hadn't gotten its name for nothing, everyone was either permanently awake, or were completely unable to fall asleep. He groaned angrily, and rolled from the bed, and onto the flood. Standing, he started to the window, and pulled the drapes back. The streets far below his window were glistening with the light of the streetlamps, and the people below walked, talked, and laughed vivaciously.

Paris frowned. With all of this intolerable noise he would not be able to sleep, and if he were not able to sleep, he would not be lively enough to attend his family's party the next night. A great family reunion was to occur, and he was to give a small speech, as well as play "chaperone" to his cousin Julie. He didn't know why she needed to be watched so closely, her parents no doubt had not trust in her, but she was nearly eighteen, and soon, no matter what they said, she would be able to be one her own.

Julie. She was such a funny girl, so innocent, but at the same time bursting to be free in the adult world. Paris smiled. He was seven years her senior, but they had been close friends ever since childhood. He had always felt responsible for his pretty little cousin, who loved life so dearly. Paris yawned; perhaps he would be able to sleep, even if the liveliness continued in the streets below.
