It was October 31, 1988, both Harry and Dudley were seven. This year, the Dursley's were letting Harry trick-or-treat. Harry was astonished at first, but then he learned he'd have to give his candy to Dudley and was no longer surprised.
Dudley was very excited! He got to pick out both his and Harry's costumes! He got Harry's candy too! He had decided on a pumpkin for himself and a wizard for Harry. Harry rather liked his costume, although, for some strange reason, Aunt Petunia was not happy about this idea at all.
That night, around 6 o'clock PM, Dudley was gleaming in his big sturdy round orange plastic outfit which Harry thought suited him very well. Too well, in fact, Harry thought looking at Dudley who was camouflaged within the pumpkin. Harry got to have an old broken broom, a stick, and a cloak with his costume. Uncle Vernon remarked that Harry looked like a freak(as usual), but that his boy Dudley looked great.
Dudley led the way from house to house. Harry had never seen Dudley move so fast. Harry got many compliments from the neighbors about how cute he looked. Aunt Petunia would glare until they said something about Dudley.
About twenty minutes into the trick-or-treating, Dudley had decided to take a break from all the house hopping and steal some of Harry's candy. Harry huffed to himself, but could do nothing about it with Aunt Petunia watching. Dudley made a mess, getting candy all over his face.
Aunt Petunia scoffed smiling, "Dudders!" She got out a handkerchief, licked it, and starte to wipe the mess off Dudley's face.
Harry laughed at Dudley's embarrassing plight while Aunt Petunia got a little more saliva on the hankie to clean up the remaining candy.
Dudley had been sitting on the ground. After having been all cleaned up, he looked from his mother to Harry. He whined, "I dont want to get up. Carry me!"
Harry looked petrified. There was no way that tiny, scrawny Harry could drag that round pumpkin all the way back to Privet drive. Petunia was thinking the same thing.
"Well, Duddy-kins, if you don't get up, you can't get anymore candy."
Dudley's eyes lit up, "CANDY!!!" He tried to stand up, but couldn't due to the costume's roundness and weight. Instead of standing, Dudley began to roll down the sidewalk. Dudley was frantic, "MUMMY! HELP!"
"Do something, boy!" she yelled at Harry.
Harry looked at his aunt oddly. How on earth was he supposed to stop a half boy -- half plastic pumpkin from rolling down the street. Harry had a moment a brilliance! He could use his wand! Harry whipped out his stick, said some strange words, and Dudley stopped.
His aunt gasped. Dudley was frozen in place. Aunt Petunia was furious, " YOU FREAK! WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?!"
Harry was confused. What had just happened?! Had he really done that?! Dudley, Mr. Pumpkin, was frozen still on a hill, not moving, even in a round shell.
Aunt Petunia snatched the stick from Harry and broke it in half, " HOW DARE YOU DO M-"
Harry was curious, "What did I do?"
Aunt Petunia looked very nervous, "NO QUESTIONS! GO TO YOUR ROOM!" Aunt Petunia ran after the stilled pumpkin child and helped him home.
Harry sadly walked back to Number 4 Privet Drive, and into his cupboard. Harry had left the candy on the kitchen table. It had been fun while it lasted, besides, he had gotten to see Dudley as a huge, round pumpkin.
