Many of us respect our world, the planet in which we all live, for it provides us all the essentials for life. But some of us only take the world for granted, failing to understand that we must provide back to the planet for it to provide for us. For without our resources, life could not strive and the world could possibly die.
There once was a time in which this almost occurred. At first, nobody seemed to notice, and therefore nobody seemed to care. But this all changed when two creatures, so different yet so alike, came together and changed it for all of us…
It happened not that long ago, when a small, yellow dragonfly who lived in a swamp returned to his home. When he got home, he was greeted by two larger dragonflies. One was pink and green, and the other was blue.
"Sparx!" the pink one cried, and it came over to him and wrapped its arms around him. "My boy, you're home!"
Sparx chuckled as he was embraced. "Mom, am I glad to see you," he said.
The blue dragonfly looked confused. "Where's Spyro?" it asked.
"Yeah, Dad," Sparx said nervously, "you see, that's the thing…" He told them both something, and it left them shocked.
"What?" gasped Sparx's mom. "You're saying that Spyro… may not have made it?"
"I'm afraid so," Sparx replied. "He sacrificed himself to save the whole world, and he told me I couldn't follow him as I wouldn't make it."
"Well, son," said his dad, wisely, "it's just what it is. If this was Spyro's destiny, then we surely can't undo it, and we must respect all that he did for us. But then again, he's not gone… He'll always be with us in spirit."
But at that moment, a voice spoke out of nowhere. "Of course not," it responded with an English accent. "Spyro isn't gone. He's still here, with all of us."
Sparx gasped. "That's Ignitus!"
"Ignitus?" asked his mom. "Who's Ignitus?"
"He was this big dragon that Spyro and I met after we left the swamp," answered Sparx. "He also taught Spyro to master his fire breath when he first used it."
"Indeed," answered Ignitus, "and young Sparx, that is why I am reaching out to you. Spyro still lives, but he just lies dormant. You can help to reawaken him, but this you cannot do on your own."
"I can?" asked Sparx. "How?"
"There lies a valley in which a fabled creature lives," Ignitus responded. "It is rather far away, but it shouldn't be that difficult for you to reach. If you go there and find it, I shall lead you there."
"Uh… okay," Sparx decided, and then he turned to his parents. "Well, I don't know how I got talked into this," he admitted, "but I do know one thing: I'm going to find Spyro and bring him home safely."
Sparx's mom smiled. "That's my boy," she whispered. "I know you'll do it."
"You've grown a lot since we last saw you, son," said his dad. "Now, it's time for you to show us what you really can do. Go on, and make us proud again."
"I will," Sparx determinedly replied, and he immediately flew away, following Ignitus's voice.
The valley that Ignitus had described was a place known as the Valley of Sacred Spirits, and it was indeed quite far away from the swamp. Fortunately, because Sparx flew over all the obstacles the path had, he got there in only half an hour. Once he did reach the valley, he flew down to ground level and looked around.
"Hello?" Sparx called, but his voice echoed around the gorge. "Anyone here? Yoo-hoo!"
Just then, another voice called out. "Who's there?!" Then, something leapt out from a tree and landed on the ground beside Sparx. It was very tall compared to him, and it was colored blue with black stripes and large ears on its head. This was Jeffrey the Bat.
"Ahh!" Sparx screamed, and he flew quickly towards a rock and hid behind it.
Jeffrey looked around, but he didn't see anything. "That's unusual," he said, "I know I heard a voice. But who said it?" Then, he noticed a faint yellow glow coming from behind the rock. "Hmm," he pondered, "there's someone there, I bet." He slowly began to walk towards the glowing rock.
Sparx suddenly got nervous, and he frantically looked around for a bigger place to hide. "I want out! I want out!" he muttered. He began to fly forwards, but then something came down right in front of him! Two big eyes glared at him, and Sparx flew back towards the rock. "I want in! I want in!" he cried, and he pressed his body against the rock.
Jeffrey was standing on top of the rock and leaning his body forward to look at Sparx. "A dragonfly?" he asked.
Suddenly, Sparx stopped cowering and flew out, feeling pleased. "Yeah, that's me!" he declared. "I'm a quality dragonfly, not just another pesky pest." As Sparx flew up, Jeffrey followed him with his head. "The name's Sparx. You got that? Uh-huh, Sparx. S-P-A-R-X. so you got a name? Huh? Do ya, do ya, do ya?"
Jeffrey just shook his head and sighed. "Well, my name's-…" he began, but Sparx interrupted him.
"Don't care. Actually, I'm lookin' for this… fabled creature thingy that'll help me find my buddy. Gotta go, I'll see ya later… or never." Sparx flew away.
As Sparx flew away, Jeffrey stared at him. "What a real pest," he muttered, and he just stayed where he was for a few minutes.
At last, there was a beeping sound and a voice. "Jeffrey, are you there?"
"That's Lilly," Jeffrey responded. He looked down at his watch and rotated the outer frame, then he pressed down on the face. "Lilly, what's up?"
"Some pesky yellow creature came by my lab and stole one of my trackers," Lilly answered. "Could you follow him and bring it back to me?"
"Sure thing, Lilly," Jeffrey agreed. "Is the tracker working?"
"I've just activated it, so it should be," answered Lilly. "Follow it using your watch's radar."
Jeffrey activated his watch's radar map, and he picked up the signal from the tracker right away. Immediately, he flew off after it.
For a little while, Jeffrey chased the tracker as far as it went. It flew across oceans, mountains, and forests until it came to a tall, ominous mountain. Green ooze poured out all over, and at the summit of the mountain was a flat clearing surrounded by rising rocks.
Jeffrey finally caught up to the tracker just as it was directly above the center of the mountain, and then he was shocked to see… Sparx! "You!" he gasped.
Sparx was startled by the sudden declaration of his voice that he flew away as fast as he could, but he accidentally dropped the tracker! It fell towards the mountain and into a hole in the middle of the top.
Jeffrey slowly descended to the peak and gently lowered his feet onto the ground. He peered down into the hole, but the inside was shrouded by a strange, pinkish-purple mist. He immediately contacted Lilly. "Lilly, I've found the tracker," he said, "but it's fallen into this pit on top of a mountain."
"Hold on," Lilly said, "let me get a bearing on where you are."
At her lab near the Valley of Sacred Spirits, Lilly the Butterfly was working on her portable computer. She was trying to get a clear reading of where Jeffrey was at, but she had never been at that specific location before. When the reading finally came up on her computer, she was frightened at the sight of the mountain.
"Ooh…" she shivered. "It looks scary… I've never seen this place before." She did some more typing on her laptop's keyboard, and she acquired a reading from the bottom. "Okay, Jeffrey," she told him, "the tracker is at the bottom of the mountain, but it looks like the inside is littered with debris. Be careful in there."
"I will, Lilly," Jeffrey assured her.
Jeffrey slowly glided down into the mountain's crater. Fortunately, once he was inside, he could see much more easily, as the mist faded more as he went deeper inside. But everywhere he looked, he could see broken structures and metallic beams.
"Wow," Jeffrey whispered. "Lilly was right. This place is in a mess." He flew carefully through all the obstacles to reach another hole in the floor.
When Jeffrey reached the bottom, he almost immediately found the tracker next to a large, purple crystal. "There it is," he said, and he glided to the floor, walked to it, and picked it up. Jeffrey was just about to leave, but then he looked at the crystal. There appeared to be something inside it.
"What's this?" Jeffrey asked, and he walked over to it. Inside the crystal, there was a figure being held in place. Its body was the shape of a dragon, but it was very small, and its eyes were closed. "Hello?" Jeffrey asked. "Are you okay in there?"
Suddenly, the figure's eyes slowly opened and its body began to move. Its movements initially were very slow, but then they got faster, and the crystal surrounding its body disappeared.
The figure was indeed a dragon. It was a purple dragon with yellow horns, yellow wings, and purple eyes. The dragon looked very weak, struggling to stand up. It was Spyro the Dragon, far from deceased as everyone had thought.
"I… I'm alive?" Spyro groaned. Then he looked up and noticed Jeffrey.
Jeffrey knelt to the purple dragon. "Are you okay?" he asked Spyro.
"Yes… I think so," Spyro answered.
At that moment, there was another voice. "Spyro? Is that you, buddy?"
Jeffrey and Spyro looked up, and they saw Sparx coming down to them.
"Spyro!" Sparx called in joy. "Oh, man, you're okay!"
Spyro looked pleased as well. "Oh, Sparx," he said, "am I glad to see you."
Jeffrey looked confused. "Sparx?" he asked. "You mean, you know this purple dragon?"
"Know him? He's my brother!" Sparx declared. Then he flew closer to Jeffrey's face. "Sure, I'll admit he doesn't look like me at all, but it's kinda a long story."
Spyro stepped in. "Okay, Sparx, maybe I should do the talking now," he told him.
"Yeah, agreed," Jeffrey muttered.
Spyro looked at Jeffrey directly. "My name is Spyro," he said to him. "What's your name?"
"I am Jeffrey," Jeffrey answered.
"How did you guys find me here?" asked Spyro.
"I was just following this tracker," Jeffrey answered.
"That thing?" asked Sparx. "Oh, that. Yeah, I was told by Ignitus to bring that to here, and then someone would be along to help you out."
"Ignitus?" gasped Spyro, and then his eyes widened with hope. "You mean, Ignitus is alive?"
"Apparently so," Sparx answered.
Jeffrey looked even more puzzled. "Who is Ignitus?" he asked.
"He's a dragon, like me," answered Spyro, "only much bigger and older than I am. I thought I had lost him in the Belt of Fire. I'm so glad he's alive!"
At that moment, Ignitus's voice spoke up. "Yes, young dragon," he responded, "I am indeed."
"Ignitus, where can I find you?" asked Spyro.
"Meet me at the city of Warfang," answered Ignitus. "But the route you had previously taken has been blocked off. You will have to find an alternate path."
After Ignitus finished speaking, Jeffrey began to talk again. "Well, you guys," he told them, "I don't know exactly what Ignitus wants to see you for, but I have to get this tracker back to my friend, Lilly. She's waiting for it." He was about to fly away, but then Spyro stopped him.
"Wait, Jeffrey," he told him. "I'm going with you. Besides, there's someone else I'm looking for."
"What?" gasped Sparx. "Come on, Spyro, we already have one dragon waiting for us. Don't you think that we should follow through with our first commitment before that?"
Spyro narrowed his eyes at the dragonfly. "I'm going with Jeffrey," he told him firmly, and then he looked at Jeffrey. "Come on, let's get out of here."
"Okay, Spyro," said Jeffrey, and the two of them flew towards the top of the mountain, leaving Sparx behind.
Sparx was grumbling for a moment about Spyro's decision, but then he realized he was left alone. "Hey, wait for me!" he called, and he followed the two of them out of the mountain.
