Sweetest Gift.
He'd never had a friend before. He didn't know what he was supposed to do or what was expected of him. All he knew was that a friend was something that was supposed to be special.
Mello chewed on a chocolate bar compulsively as he stared across the room at the strange boy in white pajamas and messy white hair. A negative photo of L.
He watched as Near meticulously built a replica of the classroom, painting and coloring in the little hand made puppets to match the students and teachers. Most seemed plain and simply unimportant.
Mello leaned forward slightly to get a better look.
There was L, carefully colored and set to the side in stunning detail. A little Near sat next to L, his only equal.
His heart ached and he bit off a large chunk of chocolate. Of course there was no Mello doll. Near only spent time on the people he cared about. L was his only special person.
Near lived in a very narrow world and only he and L were worthy of such a strong focus.
He sat back and tried to focus on something else. Anything else.
Out of the corner of his eye, Near started to shift and stand up. Mello's heart beat faster. Several students and teachers glanced his way, waiting for the inevitable.
It was only to change positions. Standing just long enough to gracefully tuck his leg back and out to the side in an unnatural position.
A few students giggled and the teacher's sighed. A few whispered. Mello angrily swallowed and stood up to give them all a glare.
Near was better than them all. It didn't matter about his legs or his condition. Near would always be the best.
He found himself frowning, looking for all the world like he was about to throw a tantrum. He didn't like to think about Near's condition. Near was his rival, even if he didn't return the feeling. He would make Near notice him! He would…
Near set a newly colored doll down next to the little Near doll. The detail was stunning.
Mello looked down at what was left of his chocolate bar.
Mello walked over to Near and sat down next to him, poking at a few of the other toys. Near didn't look up, seeming too caught up in his own world to notice.
Wordlessly Mello held out half of the chocolate bar to Near. Near paused and stared at it for a moment. A hand reached up subconsciously and began to twirl a white lock of hair as he slowly accepted the sweet offering.
Near looked up at Mello and gave a small smile before going back to his toys. Mello stood up and went back to his own work space.
He'd never had someone special before. He didn't know what he was supposed to do or what was expected of him.
All he knew was that he would do anything to keep him.
