Dear Miss Granger,
It my pleasure to inform you that commencing your 8th year at Hogwarts, you will be assuming the position of Head Girl.
She read the first line and her heart soared.
The position of Head Boy, will be assumed by Mr Draco Malfoy. You will be expected to work as a team and will be sharing a private common room and dormitory.
Fuck. Why him? Of all people. The last time she saw him was when she testifying on his behalf at the trial. Sure, he'd only done the things he did through fear but he had still tormented her for what felt like a lifetime.
Kind Regards,
Professor Minerva McGonagall
Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
P.S. I know you've staying at school over the summer Miss Granger but the sending the letter is tradition, oh and congratulations my dear.
She smiled. Professor McGonagall had acted more like a mother than a teacher to her this summer. She had stayed at school because she had pretty much nowhere else to go. Her parents were still in Australia with no idea who she was, as there was no one of reviving their memory without causing severe brain damage and Ron had broken things off when she had decided to return to Hogwarts to finish her studies so she couldn't stay at the Burrow despite Mrs Weasley's attempts to convince her. She decided it best not to dwell on her situation and started writing a letter to her best friend telling of her good, and not so good news.
After giving her letter to an owl, she return to her room to find that her things had already been moved to her new dormitory, she plonked herself down on what was now her "old" bed and let her mind wonder. What would life at Hogwarts be like now, having to share living quarters with Malfoy? Would he still tease and ridicule her? Or would he just ignore her? Either way, it wasn't going to be fun to say the least. Still, at least she would have Harry to rely on when he returned for the school year, or so she thought.
She was sat eating her breakfast in her new common room, the following morning when an owl arrived.
Dear 'Mione,
Sorry for such a late reply, I've been so busy. Well done on making Head Girl! I always knew you would, you swot, just ignore Malfoy and if he gets too much just let me know. I have some good and not so good news too! The good news is that Kingsley Shacklebolt has asked Ron and I to start Auror training immediately but the bad news is... I'm not coming to Hogwarts this year, I'm so sorry Mi, Ron isn't either but I didn't think you'd care too much about that. Make sure you write to me loads, okay?
Love,
Harry
How could he? Her best friend of 6 years had abandoned her in what was supposed to be their last year at school. But then again, how could she be angry at him, this opportunity was too big to pass up. The only problem was she'd have to deal with Malfoy all by herself.
"Granger, it's been a while."
