Sockii

"Now, listen, BA." Murdock cornered him, his eyes wide and his stance neutral. A little strange, but then again BA knew anything could be strange when it came to Murdock. "I got something for you, big guy. Now, despite the fact that I am appalled by your general lack of imagination, your overall questionable attitude towards certain members of the team, and your consistent misuse of the word 'fool', I still have come to the conclusion that you are the only human being capable of taking on this Christmas gift."

"Wha'choo talkin' about fool?" BA rumbled.

"Exactly my point," Murdock sighed, shaking his head. "Come on, BA, you're going to change my mind."

"Well wha'choo got to say?"

Murdock reached into his pants pocket and produced a familiar-looking white sock. He drew it out and looked at it fondly for a moment before returning his eyes to BA. "You see...Verne the veterinarian has gone on vacation, and Captain Cab has no need for poor Sockii here So, y'see - the little guy needs a home. And I figure you're the best one for it. Hannibal smokes too much and Face has too many women over. We don't want to give the little guy a bad impression, you know? And I can't take care of him. I'm crazy. So...you're it. Merry Christmas, big guy."

"This ain't nothin' but a sock!" BA scoffed.

Murdock's face turned hurt and he pulled the sock close, stroking it. "Don't pay him any attention, little guy. He'll come around. And he'll take good care of you. You'll see." He held the sock out to BA. "That's your daddy now. You be good to him."

For a moment, the sock seemed to bark, twitching in Murdock's protective fingers. Then, BA realized he was taking the sock, wrapping his big hands around it just as protectively, and Murdock was shuffling away, kind of quickly, almost as though he was embarrassed.

BA stared down at the piece of fabric in his hand. Then, after Murdock had disappeared from view, he folded it up and slipped it into his inner vest pocket.

"Merry Christmas to you too," he muttered.
