Kuchiki Byakuya had a certain fondness for winter, and it had something to do with his fascination with snow. As he stood on the veranda with his Captain's robe donned, his gray eyes swept over the white blanket of snow that engulfed the Kuchiki mansion and its gardens.
Everything was white. Pure white.
For him, winter was the closest to a new beginning that he could get.
He knew without anyone telling him that he hadn't been the best older brother for his adopted sister, Kuchiki Rukia. Even though he had saved her once during the Bounto's attack on Seireitei, it didn't erase the undeniable fact that he had tried to kill her.
The snowflakes fell slowly from the sky, adding another layer to the already white garden in front of him.
If only he could white out his sins like the snow whited out the scenery, but the past could not be redone. The best he could do was to treat Rukia better from now on.
He watched silently as Rukia stood in the far distance, most probably examining the frozen over pond. He didn't know when she had gotten there; it was just like her presence in his life, in which she had made herself a part of so suddenly.
The way her lithe body moved around with such grace on the snow surprised him, though he knew it shouldn't have. They had already spent numerous winters together, and it was only recently that he had begun noticing such things about her. Like the way that disobedient strand of her hair fell over her eyes, and the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she smiled or laughed, and the way she had been having breakfast together with him more often.
While he was thinking about all this, Rukia had noticed his presence and made her way over to her brother, to his utmost surprise. She was unpredictable. He never expected her to talk to him ever again since that time, but it had been the opposite. Now they were sharing more time together, and he couldn't shake off the warm feeling he got every time they did.
I owe her a proper apology.
"Rukia." He cringed at the way she reluctantly turned her head to face him. "I…" He couldn't get the words out. His mind was screaming I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry but his mouth felt as dry as sandpaper and a lump the size of a golf ball stuck in his throat. He pushed away all his aristocratic pride and as composedly as he could, and managed out, "I'm sor—"
She cut him off.
"I know."
The way she looked at him with a small smile let him know that she had already forgiven him. The heavy burden that weighed on his heart suddenly lifted and he found himself returning her smile, even if it was just a little bit.
He noticed her shivering and awkwardly put his Captain's robe over her tiny frame.
A lone snowflake drifted prettily from the sky and landed softly on Rukia's shoulder, but she didn't feel it because she had the warmth of her brother's robe embracing her.
END.

Author's Notes
I love this pairing, and I honestly don't think I did it justice xD Not much romance here but there is a tinnnnny bit of one-sided Byakuya to Rukia, just try squinting to see it.
