"Who would do this?" It was all that Debbie kept saying as Brian get her into the passenger seat of his car. "What kind of animal would do this?" He wanted to tell her to shut the fuck up, but at that same time, he was thinking exactly what she was. "Why the fuck did this happen?"

He was covered in ash and soot from the five minutes that he had actually spent in the burnt out remains of Babylon looking for Justin, and as he drove with Debbie now to Allegheny General, he wished that he had been there. That it was him instead of Michael who was clinging to life.

"How did this happen?" Debbie was a hysterical mess, it was clear to Brian, who was holding back his own terror. "Can't you go any faster?" She pleaded.

"I am going as fast as I can!" Brian snapped. "We're not the only people trying to get to the fucking hospital!"

"You're right," Debbie quieted. Brian struggled to make it through the gridlock. "It's just Michael... he's my baby. I can't lose my baby."

Brian kept his eyes focused on the road. "Listen to me," he said sternly. "Are you listening? Michael is gonna be OK. If anybody... if anybody knows Michael, it's me. And Michael is going to be OK." Brian wasn't only trying to convince Deb, he was trying to convince himself as well.

"How do you know?" Deb demanded painfully. "God..."

"Why bring him into this?" Brian said angrily. "He didn't do anything to fucking stop this. Why the fuck would he help now?" There was silence again. "Besides..." Brian was more soft spoken now. "I've known Michael since we were fourteen. I think I'd fucking know if he was gonna be OK or not. And now... I think I finally realized what a stupid son of a bitch I've been. I should have been there tonight..."

"What fucking good would that have done?" Debbie said. "I'd have you to worry about too... lying in some fucking ambulance, or dead! You're Goddamn lucky you weren't there!"

Brian had managed to get behind Michael's ambulance, pulling into the hospital. He simply stopped the car and Debbie jumped out. "Deb!" Brian called. "Deb!" He got out of the car, which sat only half in a space.

"Michael?" she cried. "Baby..."

"Debbie!" Brian came up behind her, watching along as the doctors turned Ben away at the emergency doors. "Come on." he said taking a gentle hold of her shoulders. "Come on, we have to wait. We have to wait, let them do what they have to do."

"But Michael..."

"He'll be fine," Brian said slowly. "He'll be fine. He's a superhero." All the while, Brian hoped he was right. "Ben is going inside," Brian pointed out. "We should too. We should go in."

Brian pulled Debbie gently by the shoulders, leading her in the right direction. "You better be OK, you little asshole," she said softly.

"He'll pull through this," Brian told her as he entered the hospital with her. His final comment was soft, audible only to himself. "He fucking better."
