Ariana can't help but flinching when her mother walks in. A fuzzy part of her brain recognizes that she shouldn't be scared of her, but she's still wary of anyone walking in—what if they return? The bad ones, the boys that hurt her. She doesn't really remember what they looked like, but she remembers the fear of them prodding her, touching her. Maybe her mother would do the same…
"Ari," her mother says softly, approaching her. Ariana backs up against the wall. She doesn't want to be hurt again. Why doesn't her father ever come? What happened to him?
She wants to tell her mother not to hurt her. She wants to tell her not to come closer, but her voice doesn't seem to be working.
She wants her father back. Or Aberforth. They love her. What if her mother doesn't love her.
"Come," her mother says, still in a soft tone. "We'll go on a walk outside."
Outside…?
Yes, that's where it happened, that's where the boys got here. What if they come back? Ariana's able to make her head shake. She doesn't want to go outside. It's scary outside.
"You need the air," her mother urges.
Ariana doesn't want to go outside. The boys could come back. They could hurt her again.
She can feel the magic coming off of her. She doesn't like the magic. That's what happened, right? She had magic. The boys didn't like it. What if this lady decides she doesn't like it, either?
Who is this lady, again?
No, Ariana does want to go with her. She won't go. Her father wouldn't make her go. Aberforth wouldn't make her go. She won't, she won't, she won't!
She can feel her body heating up as the lady walks closer, holding out a hand. There are sparks coming off of her, the magic bubbling.
Ariana explodes.
