I was bored. It had been a week since our last case and I was craving some action. The Psych office was quiet except for the sound of Gus' fingers tapping away on his laptop as he scrambled to write up some report for his pharmicutical job.

I reached for my pineapple smoothie that was sitting on my desk and was about to take a sip when the front door banged open, startling me. Gus looked up sharply when Rachel raced in, her face streaked with tears.

"Rachel? What- " Gus began, voice faltering as Rachel reached him, burying her face in his chest.

"He's gone!" Rachel sobbed.

Gus looked at me with a puzzled look before turning back to Rachel. "Who's gone?"

I stared at Rachel. "Is it Max?"

Rachel nodded, clinging tighter to Gus.

I reached for the box of cleanex on the windowsill and handed Rachel a handful.

"When was the last time you saw him?" I asked gently.

Rachel wiped her face with a tissue and took a deep breath before speaking. "I droped him off as school this morning and I said I'd see him this afternoon, because he wanted to walk home with his friend. I normally don't let him go without me but I wanted him to be with his friends."

Rachel shook her head, wiping at her eyes as fresh tears began to fall. "Max promised me he'd be home at 3 o'clock, but he never showed up so at 3:30 I called his friend's mother and she said that Max had never been there."

I looked at Gus. He looked as worried as I felt. Max was 7 years old, young enough to fall for strangers offering to give him a ride...or give in to curiosity and go exploring somewhere.

"Don't worry, Rachel," I said. "We'll find Max. I promise."
