"I'm sorry," Bella whispered as she paused at the door. "I guess it just wasn't meant to be." She looked back into Jacob's eyes, and saw unconcealed grief that would never fully leave them.
Jacob let out a cry of pain, and Bella took a step back towards him.
"Oh, god, Jake. I'm so, so sorry. I thought it would get easier, as time went on. That you would slowly fill in the holes in my chest. But it... it just keeps getting worse and worse. Every single time I close my eyes, I see him. And that's when I realize that I'll never truly be able to love someone else as I loved him. Never. There's just too many things time cannot heal. And even though I love you Jake, it's not enough. I love you, but it's only enough to hurt us more. I love you, but I'll never love you as much as I love him."
"Bella... Please. Can't you please give us a chance? I love you Bella, love you with all my heart and soul. God, Bella, please. Just try, try for me."
"I'm sorry," Bella whispered again. "It just wasn't meant to be." And with that, she walked out the door without looking back, not even at the sound of Jacob's strangled cry. And as she got out the door, she broke down and started to cry.
