A/N: So, in case you couldn't tell by now, I write stories on a whim, and leave them unfinished until my inner muse awakens that desire to finish that story. So, same as with all my stories, I have another story I'm starting on a whim. Enjoy, and R&R please.
Prologue: The Girl from the Apartments
A girl with flowing emerald hair stepped out of her tiny apartment. A loud noise had startled her awake; when she dressed and came out, she was surprised to see some unfamiliar people in the parking lot of the apartment.
"We're here with Batta the Beast!" the stupid looking thug loudly proclaimed. "And from this day forward, this stinkin' rat-hole is his!" Some of the residents had come outside, but they were all frightened by the two men's appearance. To say the two men were big would be an understatement; and the bigger one of the two carried a knife, which only further drove the tenants to comply, if only out of fear. But not this girl- no. She wouldn't let thugs like this bother anyone ever again. Sure, the logical thing for her to do would've been to call the cops, but the cops in the city were too few to be bothered by such a small group of ruffians. Instead, the girl would have to take matters into her own hands.
Stepping out of the doorway and into the parking lot, the girl said, "Hey, you two! If you really want this place, you're gonna have to go through me first!" This caused a sea of laughter to erupt, not only from the thugs, but also from her neighbors.
"Get back inside, Lyndis!" one of the neighbors cautioned. "A little lass like you couldn't take on those two!"
"That's right!" came another warning. "And besides- one of them's got a knife!"
"That's right, little girl," said the apparent minion, approaching Lyndis, cracking his knuckles menacingly. "Otherwise, I'd have to hurt that pretty face of yours." The creep had reached out to grab Lyndis inappropriately, but the next thing anyone saw was the thug flat on his back, a look of utter shock and pain on his face.
"I guess you didn't know," Lyndis calmly retorted, "I've been studying many forms of martial arts since I was a child. My father-" But Lyndis stopped short. The painful memories threatened to flood back into her consciousness. But there would be time for crying later; first, she had to deal with the other buffoon, that Batta guy.
"You'll be sorry for that, little bitch!" Then Batta came charging at Lyndis, his knife drawn, slashing wildly in front of him. Lyndis dodged nimbly to the side, but one of the man's wild swings managed to make contact with her upper arm. Ignoring the flames of pain that shot up from her left side, Lyndis reached out, grabbed the man's knife-wielding arm, and with a deft move, broke it clean into three pieces.
"GAAAAAHH!!!" The man's cry of pain told it all; the breaks felt much worse than they looked. Limping out, defeated and humiliated by this single girl, the two thugs quickly disappeared from sight, while muttering something about returning to the alleyways of Bern.
Dusting herself off, Lyndis triumphantly returned to her apartment, while inside her raged an emotional typhoon. She'd have a lot of straightening out to do…
