Burden of Proof

According to the scientific testimony of Brian Krakow, it is a fact that Angela Chase is always walking away from him. These last few days have proven it to him. There was the walk to homeroom after Jordan's --really his -- "Undefendable" speech, the walk to the parking lot (and Jordan's car) after their discussion leaving the bus, and tonight, the marvelously ironic icing on the cake: Angela leaving him to drive away with Jordan.

Maybe his thesis should be amended. Angela Chase is always walking away from him and into the arms of Jordan Catalano.

If there was a way, he thinks. If only there was a way to stop it.

If there were a way to slash Jordan's tires to prevent her from driving away from him, he'd do it. If there were a way to make her circumvent the parking lot, to keep her from walking down that hall, he'd do it. If there were a way to remove all the roads and all the streets and all the pathways on this earth so he could create a small space where the two of them could sit and talk and be the only two people in a perfect little world of his creation, he'd do it. He'd do it in a second. But for now, all roads lead away from him and to Jordan Catalano.

He's obsessing again, like he, the scientist, always does, over the small details and missed opportunities, the fact that again he could not muster the courage to tell her the truth she already knew.

Another fact, another scientific thesis to prove while waiting underneath the streetlamp for her to return. And though she will return, it will never be to him.
