Symphony

Summary: to Lucy, music can tell the entire story. Connected drabbles each of 125 words.

Melody

She hears the old music. She hears it in everything she does and everywhere she goes-every street and sidewalk she walks. She wonders if the melody she hears could be a reflection of the song of creation in which Aslan sang the world into being. She hears it in the sound of people laughing; it sounds of joy. She hears it in the sound the tires make as they race down the street; it sounds of urgency. She hears it in the sound of a newborn's cries; it sounds of life. She hears it in the breath of the dying; it sounds of death.

The music, Lucy decides, tells the story of the universe, from beginning to end- if one will only listen close enough.

Harmony

She sings, her eyes looking downward and reading the notes marked in the hymnal. It's a pretty song, and she likes it, but it's not true. Oh, the words they speak are true enough, she believes that- but the music the organ plays seems out of place.

She looks around at all the visitors in the church, and she realizes she's the only one that can hear the symphony going on around them. For the words they are singing, they are beautiful, and haunting, but they don't fit. Not with the rest of the song. It doesn't fit, it doesn't flow.

The music, Lucy decides, is more powerful than the deafness that surrounds her. She prays they will one day hear and join in harmony.
