Edward gazed at the dusting of snow on the sloping Texas prairie. Although he had never lived in Texas, he recalled that it rarely snowed this time of year in this area. He willed himself not to think of another locale, one where snow would also dust the grass, the leaves, the roads, the cars. He knew she was there, and he knew why he wasn't. He hadn't been religious in decades, his faith a broken memory of a former life, but that Christmas Eve, half a continent away from his soul, he whispered a prayer into the dark night.
