I'm Fine If You Are

"Ready?"

"Yes."

It was a moment of a lifetime, going to the crime of the century. They both had been remarkably quiet all morning, which was something in itself, considering how quiet Sherlock could be in his worst times. But they had both been plagued by silence this morning, both getting ready, both steeling themselves.

Sherlock wouldn't admit that it bothered him, but John thought that he was bothered. He was just too... silent, too ghostly, like he wasn't entirely there. They had their chance now. They had the chance of a lifetime to convict Moriarty, if the jury would find him guilty. There was always a possibility that- no, he wouldn't think about that.

John had straightened his jacket, had fixed his tie, while watching his own reflection in the mirror. Sherlock had been behind him, his face unreadable and emotionless as usual. John hadn't been able to tell if Sherlock had been excited or nervous. John himself, well, John had been nervous, and he still was.

There was something foreboding in the air.

John opened the exterior door of 221B, immediately being blinded by the flashes of photography. He ignored the questions and did his best to fend off the photographers, following their escort down to the awaiting car. Sherlock was on his heels, and, although John didn't look back, he could sense Sherlock's wired emotions getting the better of him.

Their eyes met, briefly, over the roof of the police car. Sherlock looked uncomfortable, just the slightest bit, most likely due to the large crowd. Sherlock had never liked a public image, and now he was having to deal with one first hand. John looked back at him, hoping that Sherlock could discern the worry and anxiety and concern that he was feeling for the detective.

Sherlock broke their eye contact, ducking into the police car. But not before John thought he saw something in return, something that said Sherlock not only understand John's concern, but was thankful for it as well.

I absolutely, absolutely love the part in Reichenbach when John and Sherlock walk out of the flat and make eye contact [or at least, look at each other] over the police car. There's just so much there in Sherlock eyes, in my opinion. So much that even something like fanfiction can't touch on it. This is the best that I can manage, and still I feel like it doesn't even brush the surface of everything in Sherlock's eyes.
