I finished all my tests in school and I'm celebrating. This is the result.
The bunker is quiet.
It's empty and chilled and the silence is deafening.
Dean's coffee cup is still standing half-full on the kitchen counter, the bolded letters on the cup spelling out "best big bro". Sam's laptop is still plugged in and not closed all the way, his pens and papers scattered around the table. It's the way they left it yesterday, when the brothers were bickering in the kitchen, both still dressed in their pajamas and both sporting impressive bedheads.
It's only a day ago.
Castiel is standing in the doorway with his fists clenched tightly by his sides. He should pour Dean's coffee in the sink before it starts to smell (Dean hates the moldy smell in their kitchen). He should shut Sam's laptop properly and move it to his room (Sam hates when his laptop's left somewhere else). He should… should…
He shouldn't be able to almost hear the Winchester brothers talk and laugh and tease and breathe. He should do something. He should clean up.
The angel stands unmoving and listens to the clock ticking and ticking and ticking before he finally vanishes.
oOo
The bunker is still quiet.
It's still empty and chilled and the silence is even thicker than before.
A fine layer of dust has started to settle over the kitchen counters and turning the black screen of Sam's laptop gray. Dean's coffee is moldy and smells funny but the cup's bolded red letters are still bright. It's almost the way they left it.
It's only been a month.
Castiel doesn't move from the doorway and he knows he should clean up. He doesn't.
oOo
The bunker is… quiet. It's empty and chilled and the silence is deafening.
The bunker is abandoned.
The coffee cup and the laptop and the notes and the pens are still where they were left, but they're all covered in dust. It's still almost the way they left it. The air feels thick and stale and every movement Castiel makes is followed by an echo, but that's okay. He doesn't move much anyway. He never does; just stands in the doorway and watches.
It's only been a year.
It's funny how the years used to flow past back up in Heaven. Down here it's felt like an eternity.
oOo
The bunker is… gone.
Only rubble is left, the charred wood and bricks the only evidence that anything was built here at all. It's quiet. Quiet and empty and chilled and ruined.
Dean's half-full coffee cup and Sam's plugged in computer and scattered notes are gone, no longer covered in dust but taken by the fire. It's not the way they left it.
It's only been a century.
Castiel's knees hit the ground and he doesn't know what to do. He thinks he should cry, but he doesn't know how.
The bunker is gone, and the Winchesters are long forgotten and buried in the past.
Please leave me a review? Slapping the writer is unwelcome but very understandable.
