Setting: Gawain packing his bags at the end of the episode.
"Go to the King. If you tell him, you're a noble then he would reconsider. I'm sure of it. Please. Tell him." Merlin protested passionately, watching his new found friend and once lover pack his few and trusty belongings; preparing to leave Camelot forever; banished.
Pausing, Gawain turned to look at Merlin, seeing the way this was tearing him up; the unshed tears glistening in his eyes. Averting his gaze from such an innocent heartbroken stare, Gawain focused on the floor before muttering a response. "It wouldn't change a thing. Not to a man like Uther. Once his mind's made up that is it. You should know that better than anyone." Hoisting his satchel over his shoulder, Gawain moved towards the doorway where Merlin stood, crestfallen.
"But where will you go, what will you do? How will you survive?" Merlin protested in vain, already knowing he had lost. Hating the way his voice sounded petulant and pathetic; even to his own ears.
"Never you fret. I've got everything I need right here." Throwing Merlin one of his most dashing smiles, Gawain patted his satchel and sword in turn. "As for where I'll go, well we'll see where the road takes me. I'll be just fine, don't worry about me, I can take care of myself." Again, he threw Merlin a genuine smile, tinted with sadness and loss. In truth he was not sure who he was reassuring, himself or Merlin.
Searching out Merlin's eyes, he hesitatingly added. "If you're that worried about me, then you could always come with me?" His voice belied his uncertainty, though in his heart he already knew the answer, despite how much he wished otherwise.
Merlin regarded Gawain with certainty and grief. "You know I can't leave Arthur. He needs me. I have to stay. I wish you could too." By the end several tears had fallen from his eyes, the last part said almost silently.
Gently, Gawain reached out and cupped Merlin's smooth cheek. "It's all-right love, I understand." It was said equally as soft as Merlin's voice a moment earlier, neither wanting to break the peaceful spell between them. "Knew as much when I asked... but I had to, just in case. However, you are right. Arthur needs you here. Watch over our boy okay. For a noble, he's not half-bad."
That got a smile out of Merlin, albeit a watery one. "You know I will."
"He'll be a good king."
"Aye. That he will."
Silence settled over them once more. Realisation was beginning to draw in on them once more.
"Maybe one day I'll return to Camelot... that is, if there's anything for me to come back to?" Gawain tried to keep the hope from his voice. Afterall they had only spent the one night together and he was now leaving the city for an unknown length of time.
Instead of answering verbally, Merlin closed the gap between them, catching Gawain's lips in a passionate fiery kiss.
Shocked, it took Gawain a moment before he responded with equal fervour.
They parted, flushed and breathless, knowing no matter what the future may bring, there passion for each other would never diminish. One day... when Arthur was King, they would have their time in the sun but for now they would part and await the day in which they could be reunited in love's embrace once more.
Okay, well that's all for now and I hoped you liked it! Bye!
