The young couple that came in a few times a week for coffee always grabbed the attention of anyone in the café. They were well-dressed, stunningly beautiful and just seemed to radiate confidence and success.
The gentle lighting gleamed off her dark hair and caught the red and gold tones in his. Winter months brought a rosy, wind burnt flush to his cheeks while hers was always a perfect shade of coffee. Blue and brown eyes were always right and animated and their smiles could have been plucked from a toothpaste commercial.
So many similarities, so many differences, so lovely.
A few of the staff made up little stories about them to pass the time. Hey, it occupied the time for them. Pouring coffee and selling muffins was not rocket science.
They had decided that Matt and Alesha ( those were the names someone had overheard them using) were professors, not married, but in a stable, long term relationship. Happy, beautiful, young professionals living a life anyone could dream about.
Standing behind the counter, refilling an urn of Half &Half, Sasha looked over at Mel and sighed, "Don't you just love when they pop in?"
Mel glanced over at the table amidst a sea of uniformed police officers and smiled, "They do class up the place."
"They're watching us again."
DS Matt Devlin grinned across the table at Alesha Phillips, Jr. Crown Prosecutor. "The biscuits are worth it," he quipped, taking a bite and washing the snack down with a slug of coffee.
"True," she agreed, wondering why the staff at their favorite café found them so interesting. After all, they were just a pair of overworked, underpaid civil servants with emotionally damaging baggage and a weakness for good quality coffee.
