"Finn, I can take away the pain, please just let me do something..." Bubblegum pleaded, eyes twinkling with tears barely held back.
"N-No! No..." The frail old man shifted his deep set eyes to the candy princess by his bedside, as lovely and radiant as the day he met her all those years ago. "I know my time is up, I don't want these precious few moments left with you to be numb." He barely managed to finish before a series of harsh rasping coughs overtook him, his body shaking violently with each cough.
All his wife could do was to simply squeezed his hand tighter, trying to choke back tears behind a rapidly crumbling facade of trying to be strong.
When the violent attacks where over, he leaned his head back on the pillow, wheezing gasps escaping him.
"Please my love, you're in a lot of pain, is it really worth it?"
"You're worth the all pain, always have been, always will be." A shaking wrinkled hand raised to her cheek, wiping away tears.
"You're beautiful you know?" he sighed, his glassy eyes staring into her own sorrow filled orbs.
"You haven't aged a day since I met you." She didn't reply, silent tears streaming down her face as she choked back sobs. "Hey, hey, c'mon peebs don't cry. We both knew this day would come eventually, right from the start. We lived on borrowed time, and now that time is up. What matters is, we had a good run."
This brought a sad smile to her pink lips. "The best."
Just as he was about to reply, another wave of brutal hacking and rasping engulfed him. This one was worse, pain exploded through him with every movement.
"Won't be long now, soon I'll embark on the greatest adventure of all. Just hold my hand until I go, please."
"To the very end."
As Finn's vision started to blur, he took in every detail of his love's face. The way the golden morning rays of light lightly kissed her tear stained face. The way it made her glow, radiating perfection. Like a bright pink angel. His angel.
