The blinking answering machine was the first thing Buffy noticed when she came into the house that had been home for the last month.
"You have one new message." The electronic voice bounced throughout the empty house; a rare occurrence, as the place was normally swamped with newly turned slayers.
She pressed the 'play' button with a sigh, hoping the call wasn't urgent.
"'Ello, Buffy."
Buffy steadied herself against the wall. It couldn't be him. There was no possible way Spike had left her a message.
"I, er, guess you're not 'ome right now." His voice continued.
She could almost see him doing that fidgeting thing he did when he was nervous.
"Right, um, this is Spike," There was a pause as he fumbled for the right words. "I know you probably think I'm dead and all, after all I was dead, and I guess technically I'm still dead, but . . . it's a bit of a long story."
Buffy grabbed a tighter hold on the wall; afraid she would fall over.
"So, ah, if you feel like callin,' just to catch up or what-not, my number's 323-987-5684."
There was a pause as he dallied, trying to think of a reason not to hang up the phone.
"Well, bye then, love."
There was another pause as he hung up, and then a shrill beep echoed down the hallway.
"End of messages." The telephone informed Buffy as she stared at it shock. It couldn't be possible. Then again, too many impossible things had happened for her to use that excuse anymore. Spike was back. And suddenly, all she wanted was to hear his voice again.
She reached to press the replay button but stopped herself, taking a deep breath.
With a trembling hand, she picked up the phone and dialed.
