She wasn't sure why today felt so odd. As any mother would understand while raising a young child, any time there was a peaceful moment to enjoy it could be described as bliss. Lily Potter was most certainly no exception. Albeit most mothers had not raised a child in the tumultuous times that she was currently raising her precious green eyed gem. However, today did not feel peaceful.
Gathering a bubbly Harry into her arms after his afternoon nap, she watched out the window at the muggles passing by. Little ones hopping happily in front of their parents in amusing costumes. Pumpkins, angels, and a witch here and there. She sighed. Halloween will forever and always be her favorite and most memorable holiday. Even before becoming a student at Hogwarts, she had felt most in her element during this time of year. Considering where she was now, the irony was astounding.
Harry began to fidget, bringing her out of her thoughts. She turned almost immediately to her left and noticed her husband looking on. He had a sad sort of smile on his face and seemed to be almost as lost in his own thoughts as she had been moments before.
"Do you ever regret it?" murmured James. He never made eye contact with her and several moments passed before she even thought to answer.
"Regret it?" she questioned as she set Harry to the floor to rejoin his previously discarded toys. Lily made a few steps toward her husband but did not finish her approach.
"Regret what we have here? If it weren't for us falling for each other like we did, you'd be far safer than you can ever be with me," he breathed barely above a whisper. As if he thought that somehow Harry would understand and accuse him of not loving his own son.
"James Potter, you take that back right this instant,"came Lily's indignant reply.
"But you don't --" stuttered James. Lily closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around his torso.
"James, I love you. And no matter what is going through your head or how bad this might get, I will always love you. Nothing means more to me than you and Harry. Don't ever think for even a moment that it will ever change," she explained, barely audible for all of the emotion in her voice.
"I'm sorry Lily, you know I feel the same. Today just feels off, you know?" replied James as he returned Lily's embrace.
"I know what you mean. I think I'm going to start supper, sound good?" sighed Lily as she attempted to lighten the mood.
"Yes, thank you love. I'm going to spend some time playing with my son. Come here Harry my boy.." said James as he moved to join Harry in a light hearted game of blocks.
Lily let out a small laugh as Harry pelted a block right into the head of her unsuspecting husband. As worked her way to the kitchen, she glanced over to the calender hanging on the dining room wall. October, 30 1981, and the date didn't seem so foreboding. Perhaps she and James were simply both going stir crazy. Feeling rather silly for even worrying about it, Lily put aside any thoughts other than that of cooking supper for her two favorite boys in the world. This would all be over soon and things could finally move forward.
A/N: Well for those of you don't know for sure when the Potter's were killed, the date is October 31, 1981. This story is meant to imply that perhaps James and Lily knew what was coming for them. Anywho, sorry for the sad story. I was in one of those moods! Read and Review please!
