"Jackie you need to wake up honey," Molly gently sat on the side of her sleeping son brushing a finger down his cheek. The child only responded with a mutter of some language that only exists during the realm and reality known as dreams. She repeats the command increasing the volume and now adding shaking into the mix. Ever so slowly and reluctantly his eyes are opened to stare at his mother in annoyed wonder.
"What is it mommy?" He asks rubbing a bawled up fist against both his eyes. Where to begin, how to start, do I say the words gently to protect him for a few more minutes? She thought to herself watching him grow tired of the silence.
"We have to go somewhere, there was an accident," That was the trigger word until this point she was holding strength and courage hand in hand than with accident they both ran away to be replaced by fear and sorrow. Jack might have been young only celebrating his fifth birthday weeks prior, a great party with tons of gifts and even a clown, but he wasn't stupid. He could sense a great change flowing from his mother. It scared him.
"What kind of accident?" And after a pause he added, "Where's daddy?" Without hearing the words or watching the tears now raining from his mother's eyes he knew the answer. He knew his daddy wasn't here and would never be again.
