Wheels of a speeding car alerted Mac that the shooting had ended. He lifted his head from the bar floor slowly, checking for his team. The windows of the bar had shattered completely from the barrage of bullets, sending waves of glass to the floor. Mac pushed himself up to his elbows. Glass that covered his back clattered to the floor.
"Everybody alright?" Mac called. In front of him sat Stella and Flack. He could see their covered figures. "Stella? Don? You two alright?"
Stella lowered her hands from her head. Mac caught sight of blood on her hand. Most likely from the glass when the bullet shattered her glass. "Yeah…I'm ok."
Flack sat up from the floor behind Stella. "I'm good."
Mac looked behind him. Hawkes was brushing the glass off his coat. Sid looked up from the floor; his hair was covered in glass. "Sid, you two alright?"
Sid nodded. "I think so."
"Hawkes?" Mac asked.
"I'm good, Mac." Hawkes answered.
Mac looked around the bar. Four members of his team. Three were missing, Adam, Lindsay, and Danny. Mac rose higher on his knees. "Adam? Lindsay? Danny?"
"Over here." Adam called. He had a small cut on the right side of his forehead.
"Danny, Lindsay?" Mac called.
"Mac!" Lindsay called. The table in front of her was pushed to the side. Mac could see Lindsay lying beneath Danny's arm.
"You guys alright?" Mac asked.
Lindsay nodded slowly. Danny's arm moved from her back, allowing her to sit up. Danny started to push himself upright. He stopped short, crying out in pain. "Ah, god!"
"Danny?" Lindsay asked. Mac sensed the panic in her voice.
"Gahh, I can't move my legs!" Danny cried.
Lindsay sat up completely. "Oh god. Hawkes!"
Hawkes pushed himself to his feet and hurried to them. "He's been shot in the back. Call EMS! Sid, give me a hand!"
Danny groaned in pain. "Ah, god this hurts."
Hawkes carefully lifted Danny by his shoulders, rolling him onto his back. "Damn, through and through."
"That's not what I wanna hear, Doc." Danny said. He grit his teeth and groaned again.
"We got EMS in five minutes." Flack informed.
"Bullet went straight through him. He's bleeding internally. Lindsay, give me your jacket, keep Danny talking." Hawkes ordered.
Lindsay nodded. She pulled her jacket off and passed it to Hawkes. Lindsay grabbed Danny's hand as Hawkes positioned the coat underneath Danny's back. Danny cried out again from the pain. Lindsay held Danny's hand, trying to comfort him.
"Hang in there Danny." Hawkes said. He stripped off his own jacket and placed it over the exit wound in Danny's stomach.
"I'm tryin' doc, believe me." Danny seethed. His eyes fluttered. Danny seemed to be fighting to overwhelming feeling to pass out.
Lindsay noticed Danny's struggled. She held his cheek in one of her hands. "Hay, stay with me, Messer."
Danny tried to fight the pain and exhaustion. "I dunno if I can babe."
"You damn well better try, Danny." Lindsay begged. She squeezed his hand, trying to fight back her worried tears. She wasn't about to lose Danny after all they'd been through. "You've never given up Danny, so don't start now. You hear me?"
Danny winced at his wife's voice and the pain that was engulfing him whole. "Sorry Montana."
Lindsay felt Danny's hand grow limp in hers. His eyes closed and his breathing lessened. "No. Danny, no!"
"Damn it!" Hawkes yelled. Panic flooded through his system. He'd treated patients in the same situation, but never someone he knew. Hell, not even a friend of his. Danny was slipping through his fingers and there was nothing anyone could do to save him.
