"Would you date me?"
Charles is put off by the question. Would he date her? Raven? The girl - woman, really, but he still thought of her as a child - who was, for all intents and purposes, his sister?
He can feel the very surface of her mind, though, and knows what she's getting at.
"Of course I would," he answers without looking up, turning a page of his thesis as he continues, "any young man would be lucky to have you. You're stunning."
"Looking like this."
The tone of her voice makes Charles frown. "I- uh- what-?" he stops mid sentence, a thought occurring to him. He looks up, and has to force himself not to jump at her appearance. "Blue?" He regrets the word as soon as he says it; she's baring her true form at him, asking for reassurance, and he says blue?
Raven's expression doesn't change, but Charles can tell he's let her down.
"I'm sorry," he says immediately. There is a pause. "Of course I would. You must know that when I said stunning, I meant regardless of what form you choose to take." He looks down at papers he says the next bit, trying to sound casual. "Besides, even if I was talking about your appearance - which I'm not," he looks up to emphasise this point, before glancing back down again, "You're still stunning, even blue." He isn't reading her mind, but that doesn't mean he can't feel the waves of relief and disbelief rolling off her mind.
"Really?"
He looks up at her, making sure to meet her eye; this is a very important point. I won't ever lie to you, Raven, he remembers telling her - well, another promise down the drain.
"Really."
This moment in the movie always make me cringe. I mean, really Charles? Blue? That's what you have to say? Sometimes he's so thick. Even if he didn't believe it, he could lie.
Then I remembered that I write fanfiction, and decided to fix it. So there.
