They'd lost a lot of things. CBI had lost four good men in no time at all and Jane had lost another chance at catching the one person responsible for murdering his wife and child, Red John. In a way he'd killed Bosco, indirectly. He wanted the Red John case badly, everyone knew that, but he realized that Bosco's death shouldn't have been part of the unavoidable conditions. He'd never liked the man and he'd never hidden it. Still, he'd made a promise at the man's deathbed. He would kill Red John, as soon as possible. The last part was something he promised to himself.
Red John wasn't invincible, if anything proved his vulnerability it was the mistake he'd made. Jane vowed to himself, to the team and even to Bosco that he would not let Red John get away again. This was the last time he'd slipped through his fingers like grains of sand.
The case belonged to him again, to Lisbon's team, but definitely to him. He would play this game. He would win it even if it had stopped being a game a long time ago. He doubted it had ever been a game in the first place. He'd enjoyed 'reading' the serial killer. Now he just wanted to breathe again. So far Jane had always been one step behind. He'd had enough.
Jane had started this duel and he would end it as well. He could not change the deaths, the blood on his hands, but he could try to make things right again. He would make Red John suffer for the lives he'd touched.
"Jane?" He recognized Lisbon's voice, his voice of reason. He realized he was just sitting there, staring at the opposite wall.
"I'm good, ready to go," he told her.
It was time to go to work again, move on, but not for long, because he'd made a promise and he planned on keeping it.
The end
