Pendant
There were a lot of things that made Himeko stop dead in her tracks. All of a sudden the roar of the impatiently waiting traffic and the footsteps of the passing crowd faded into the background and became silent.
She saw the long dark hair, brushed perfectly, soft and waving steadily in the gentle breeze. A shampoo and conditioner of the highest quality had been used on it; something that was given away by the way each strand caught the sunlight.
She saw the deep eyes, bright and wonderfully blue. They gazed back at her with an expression that seemed so passive, despite the confusion they displayed as well.
She saw the way this girl was poised. Her shoulders right back and her chest out to carry herself with an unrivalled confidence. She had been walking with a sense of purpose, knowing what she wanted and going towards it.
But what truly took Himeko's breath away was seeing a hint of silver chain hanging around the girl's neck, catching the light.
Her legs were moving again, carrying her forward and soon she was almost nose-to-nose with the familiar stranger. Himeko reached out and gently took hold of the pendant that was hidden behind a pink seashell necklace, an action that she would have considered rude before. But somehow she felt comfortable doing it, and the girl just stood, allowing her to inspect the silver disc that hung from her neck.
There were markings on the disc, the simple patterns arranged to resemble the sun. Himeko turned it over and there was her name carved in small neat writing.
Within a heartbeat, Himeko had flung herself forward and wrapped her arms around the girl. She called out Chikane's name again and again.
The girl stood, passive and patient. As Himeko quietened, she spoke.
"Are you the one I've been looking for?"
Himeko looked up at her with eyes filling with tears. She blinked, causing some to spill down her cheeks, then reached down into the shirt she wore and pulled out the silver chain that she had not removed since the battle.
The girl took it between her fingers, closely inspecting the crescent moon shape. She flipped it over and read the engraved name. A gasp caught in her throat.
"It is you. I'm not sure if you understand, but..."
Himeko understood, and showed that by embracing her again and cutting off her words with a soft kiss. She felt the girl's hands press lightly into her back, gently coaxing her forward a little bit more and deeper into the kiss.
There was a long, loud beep of a car horn.
"Get out of the road, morons!"
Himeko giggled nervously as they separated. "Maybe ... we should at least take this to the sidewalk."
There was that beautiful smile she loved so much. "Sounds good."
