Skulduggery pulled out his gun and shot the man in the chest, and he exploded in yellow light. Skulduggery flew backwards, watching little fragments of Crimson Mischief's skin.
"Warlock" Skulduggery murmured, then Valkyrie Cain burst into the room, fire in one hand, shadows in the other.
"What happened here?" she demanded, "I didn't even get to fight anyone!"
"Now now, Valkyrie, we can supply your violent tendencies later-"
"Hey! I'm not viole-" Valkyrie tried, but Skulduggery continued,
"Because I want to know what Warlocks are doing back?"
"Warlocks?" Valkyrie asked, and Skulduggery tilted his head, and said
"I don't now why he exploded, though, Warlocks are meant to heal with the- Ohhh…" Skulduggery said nodding, "The Surge Spot"
"The Surge Spot?" Valkyrie asked, as they headed to the Bentley.
"Yes, when a Warlock has the Surge, a spot on there bodies is randomly chosen to be a vulnerable spot, like a self-destruct. If you're a lucky Warlock, it's somewhere like their ear, but sometimes, in this case, it's the chest" Skulduggery started the engine, and pulled onto the road.
"So, where are we going?" Valkyrie asked.
"Roarhaven, we need to inform the Sanctuary, maybe fill out some forms, get some help"
Valkyrie smiled.
"I didn't ask where we should be going, I asked where we are going"
"To speak with your dead uncle"
"Gordon? Why?"
"I believe he knew quite a bit about Warlocks, he was very interested in them, and so he wrote the book The Lighted Man"
Valkyrie leaned back, and said "Ohhh… I knew I recognised Warlocks from somewhere!"
"Yes, the character in the book was based, on a Warlock"
The Bentley pulled up to the vast house, and they got out.
Gordon was in the kitchen.
"Gordon! How-"
"Ah! Stephanie! I am delighted to have received this" Gordon said, gesturing to a floating platform holding the Echo Stone, glowing gently, "It is a FloatBot, it is for holding things, and you can summon it to you when you want it! Ravel discovered it and knew it would be perfect for me"
Skulduggery and Valkyrie studied the floating platform.
"How does it work?" Valkyrie asked curiously, and Echo Gordon strolled into the living room, and started to fade away, being to far away from the stone. He cleared his throat, and said "FloatBot, come" The platform glowed green and hovered over to Gordon, and he came into focus.
"It's held in the air by magic"
"Cool" Valkyrie said,
"Very useful" Skulduggery said.
"Anyway," Gordon said, "Why are you here?"
"Don't you think it's to see my beloved uncle?" Valkyrie said,
"And a very good friend?" Skulduggery said, but Gordon just laughed.
"Okay, fine. We need information on Warlocks" Skulduggery said, and Gordon smiled and walked to his study, shouting, "FloatBot! Follow!" and the little platform whizzed off to follow him.
