A blue Chevy turns a corner onto a gravel road. It drove a little ways before it stopped on the side of the road. A young woman of about 18 stepped out of the passenger side of the road. Without looking back, she told the driver to stay there. She wouldn't be long.
The short, bespeckled brunette walked over to her destination. This was the first time in over two years that she had been there. She didn't like being in this place. Glancing around, she sat on a stone bench. Taking a deep breath, she started to speak.
"Hi mom. I want to apologize for not coming earlier. I know that I should have, but I've been busy. When you left, I felt lost. You weren't there anymore to help us with school or to make us laugh.
"It was especially hard on dad. He tried to be strong for us, but eventually, he had to get out of there. Too many memories, he said. So he moved us to Oakwood. The house he found us wasn't too bad, actually. It was a bit smaller than the one in Lawndale, but sis and me made the most of it.
"The worst part about the move, though, was leaving all my friends and going to a new school. Sis, of course, made friends right away. I swear, she gets more like your sister every day. I did make one friend, though. Her name in Andrea, but everyone calls her Andy. You'd like her, mom. She's sarcastic, like me, is actually involved in extracurriculars and doesn't care what people say about her. She also gets along with Jane, which is great because Jane often comes up for the weekend.
"I also have some news. I have a boyfriend. We met in school in Oakwood. His name is Mark and he is so nice. He's the one that drove me here. Also, graduation is next week. I'm to be the salutatorian. I have to give a speech, but otherwise, the ceremony shouldn't be too boring. Dad says that everyone is going to be there."
The woman paused, unsure of where to go from there. There was so much more she wanted to say, but she wasn't sure how to put them into words. Finally, though, she said, "Well, I better go. Mark is waiting for me in the car and I promised that I wouldn't take too long."
The woman finally looked up at the stone in front of her. The one that said:
Daria Marie Sloan
1981-2020
Daughter of Jake and Helen
Sister of Quinn; Wife of Tom
Mother of Kristin and Joan
"I miss you, mom." Kristin said, wiping her eyes. "I wish that you could come to graduation and see me make my speech. I wish you could meet Mark and Andy."
Kristin stood up and went to the headstone. Kneeling, she placed a single white rose on the ground. "I love you, mom," she whispered. Standing, she returned to the car.
