PROLOGUE

The kit, homeless, pawed through the forest, alert of every sound. Everything had happened so fast. One minute his mother
was nursing him, the next...He shuddered at the sight that often troubled him. He had no home and he knew his time was
inevitably coming. Soon the gang of cats that had done this would find him, and the poor kit knew he would be no match
against them. Out like a light, He thought. Just like my mother.
The kit had barely a moons experience existing. Despite all he had been through, he was still a very young cat. His
gray eyes shone in the moonlight with sorrow. He didn't have time to think about the past; He had to get moving. The air slowly
turned from freshly scented to a disgusting scent. As the kit strode on, one paw in front of the other, he encountered a
rushing river. The steady rushing water, crashing against the rocks, felt strangely relaxing to the kit. The kit grew tired as
he lay by the water, to the point where he fell face-first into the water.
The kit squealed loudly as the waves crashed overhead, and with no experience of swimming, the kit realized he would
die not at the paws of the rogues, but the river he had found. Then miraculously, he felt teeth against his rough scruff.
He struggled against the unfamiliar force, but his instincts kicked in, and he went completely limp, almost against his
will. He watched as he was pulled out of the freezing water.
"Are you okay?" The cat who pulled him out mewed.
But the kit was too in shock to mewl a single word. Soon exhaustion overpowered him, and he fell asleep in the
jaws of an unfamiliar cat.
