The sun had just set late on a Thursday night. The last of the Jeffersonian employees had since gone home, and the lab was almost silent. Brennan was in her office, reading some lab test results on a case she and Booth had been working. The sound of a phone ringing echoed through the lab.
"Brennan."
"Hey, Bones, it's me. We finally got a confession from the victim's boss. Got anything for me?"
"Hodgins matched the fibers on the Ferguson's coat to the lining of Davis' trunk. Turns out your gut was right, Booth.....I told you, you've still got 'it'."
Booth grinned through the phone. "Right. You still at the lab?"
"Yeah, but I was just about to go home. I guess I can start on some of the paperwork."
"It's getting late; we can start on the paperwork tomorrow. How about you and me go for celebratory drinks at the Founding Fathers? For closing the case, and you know, for me still having 'it'." Brennan smiled, and chuckled to herself.
"Sure. I'll meet you there in about 30 minutes."
Brennan walked into Founding Fathers, wading through the crowd of people standing at the door. She spotted Booth's waving hand at the corner of the bar, and smiled as she walked over to him. She sat down next to him, noticing that he already had two beer bottles with him.
"I didn't know what you wanted so I just got you a lager. Is that alright?"
Brennan replied, "It's fine."
They sat in silence for a few seconds before Brennan started again.
"How did you know about Angela and Wendell before I did? Do you think she's still -- "
Booth laughed. "It was kind of obvious, Bones."
"Oh. Well, I doubt they will be together for long anyways."
Booth's eyes widened. "Bones!"
"What? It's true. She and Wendell are probably just a result of the end of her celibacy. She hasn't had sex in over 5 months, you know. Wendell was the first to reach out to her. If it had been Jack ---"
"You don't think they're in love?", Booth interjected.
"You know how I feel about that. I can see that they're happy. It's just…you and I both know Angela's history with men."
"Things can change. I mean, Wendell's a nice guy and -- "
"You're right, but, really, how do you know that someone isn't just going to change their mind one day? Feelings and emotions are transient."
"You just have to have faith in the other person. And trust them, trust that they won't hurt you."
Brennan contemplated this for a moment.
"Like how I trust you?"
Booth's eyes bore into hers as he searched for the possibility a double meaning. Disregarding the thought, he replied.
"Yeah, just like that", he whispered. A second later he added, "Because you know, we're partners."
Brennan smiled and said, "We're like Scully and Mulder."
"How do you--"
"I've done a little research", she said with a proud grin on her face.
Booth smiled at her, silent for a moment. Finally, he spoke, staring at her intensely.
"No", Booth started, "We're better than Scully and Mulder."
