Thought of this when I went through Deviantart the other night… Posting it because it fits so terrifyingly well… Um… The Creator of the image who inspired this is named… Or, usernamed… AssassinofRome… Or close to that… Just look up Stanley and Zero images and you'll find them soon enough, believe me. Anywho, let's get on with the fun, shall we?
If Only, If Only…
When he came to the camp, well, Zero hadn't exactly thought much of him, but as he spent more time there, Zero began to realize that Stanley Yelnats the Fourth meant a whole lot to him. He had done everything he could to protect him, in an attempt to show Stanley just how much he cared for him. If only Stanley could see…
When they had been together, every moment of Zero's life was perfect. He was finally happy- only with Stanley. He hadn't wanted to run away from him. He hadn't ever wanted that. But when confronted with no other option, Zero had to. He loved Stanley, but he couldn't stay at Camp Green Lake. He looked back at Stanley every chance he could as he ran, and every time he did he wanted more and more to run right back to him. But he hadn't.
Sleeping under an overturned boat, Zero had never thought he'd hear another human voice ever again, especially not the voice of the only one he loved. He heard Stanley call out to him and when he had seen him, it felt as though his heart had taken flight. And when Stanley held him in his arms Zero knew he never wanted to be anywhere else. Stanley had come after him- Stanley cared about him! If only Stanley knew that he meant so much more than his own life to him.
Stanley had told him he would die out here, but when Stanley had told him that it only made Zero happier. Stanley hadn't mentioned himself, only Zero; he was so worried about Zero's safety that he hadn't mentioned worrying about his own life.
They walked and climbed together to the top of God's Thumb, and Stanley had nearly fallen to his death. Zero would be damned if he had let that happen. He would do anything to keep that boy alive- even allow his hands to be sliced open by a shovel as he pulled him to safety. As they kept going, Zero constantly wondered if Stanley knew how he felt about him. If only Stanley could see what Zero saw when he looked at him, then Zero wouldn't have to worry about it. If only Stanley could see how perfect he was.
Zero wasn't sure what happened, but suddenly he felt Stanley moving him and repeatedly saying that he had him. He tried to tell Stanley how he felt- he knew he needed to. In his mind he said the words he wanted Stanley to hear, but his lips hadn't moved with him. If only Stanley could have heard his thoughts, then he'd know Zero loved him.
And when they were at the top of God's Thumb Zero had been so nervous he hadn't found his voice. He couldn't tell Stanley how he felt. If only he were brave, then Stanley would have known that he loved him. If only Zero had kissed him, then Stanley would have known and he would have loved him back.
If only if only… It was all Zero could hear in his head as he watched Stanley find a beautiful girl named Gem. It was all Zero could tell himself as Stanley kissed her and as Stanley loved her. If only he had told him. If only he had loved him. Zero would never have Stanley. If only If only… If only if only… Then they would be together…forever. If only… If only…
Angsty…! Yeah.. the image inspired a not-so happy ending One-shot… It made me think of what they could have been if they were together…
