He wanted to break him.
Because he loved him more than anything else.
When they had first met, the child had been nothing more to the boy than a waste of space. His existence in this world was meaningless in the boy's point of view. He was an orphan, a filthy child of the streets. He wasn't talented and he wasn't determined to do much more than amuse the class. What a waste.
Though as the young child grew older, his dreams and goals came to manifest, bringing with them a bout of unwavering determination and in that, the boy found a rival. He was the person that kept him going, gave him a reason to push harder. He reminded him that he had a goal to reach and in this, they found a friend.
Friendship gave way to uncomfortable teenage hormones and the teens fell victim to the feelings their bodies had routinely imposed on them. It wasn't love. They didn't know what it was. Confusion causes uneasiness and they pushed each other away. How could they deal with each other when they couldn't even deal with themselves?
They grew farther apart during that period and the separation enlightened them to many things they hadn't noticed nor wanted to notice before.
The younger teen grew stronger as the other grew darker. Pasts resurfaced and pain was left to be dealt with alone because they didn't have each other to share it with.
That pain broke him and the boy… no man left in a dark rage. He had a reason to do so but he knew deep down why he truly did it. His young friend had grown stronger, had become brighter and it tore at his insides. He wanted to break him and so he left. Threw his peaceful life away just so he could watch those azure eyes swirl with anger and self-hate as they drained to the dull lifeless hue that had already been promised to him via shinobi lifestyle.
Life is a funny thing.

"I will kill you."
The statement was quiet and apathetic and the younger man flinched, crawling up to the elder raven.
"Than I'll be the one to kill you." His eyes swarmed with emotions and the elder stood in rage, yet pleased that the challenge was still present.
"As if you could, foolish boy. You'll die before you come even close." The man's eyes darkened and he stood as well, showing his determination. That damn determination.
The raven growled and tugged the blue-eyed fool close to him "You'll never learn." The man stumbled towards him and their lips met in a crash of furious passion, hate, unclaimed loyalty, and confusion.
Sasuke pushed the man into a boulder as they parted for air, listening for the satisfying crunch of bones. Naruto staggered out, his hair streaked with blood, rasengan's chakra swirling in the night air.
They fought and it was a tie of course. The challenge wasn't close to being over. Sasuke sneered before placing the body on a place where his teammates were sure to find him. Naruto opened his eyes and glared, causing Sasuke to grunt in annoyance "I'll kill everyone you hold precious, dobe."
Naruto laughed weakly before setting his head down "You'd have to kill yourself as well, teme." He coughed up blood before continuing "I'll bring you back, bastard. A ninja never breaks their promises."
Sasuke's eyes narrowed with rage and he turned without a word, the promise of death ringing in the air.
"You'll never understand."
And even as he said it, he knew it didn't matter. This would kill them but Sasuke would give anything to see him break. All because he loved him and that determination.
Because it was all he had to live for.
Breaking those determined, desolate confused blue eyes.
