Just having a bit of writer's block so I popped out a drabble for my 100 fic challenge. Just something short and sweet, I guess.
29. Happiness
A bright light flooded his eyelids, and he blinked groggily. It was morning; the sunbeams cut through the curtains and pooled on the white cotton bed sheets between them. Sasuke rubbed his eyes and leaned up on his elbows glancing to his left. Naruto. Sleeping blissfully. At least he looked that way to Sasuke. His arms were crossed behind his head, the sheet kicked down to his waist, a contented smile playing at his lips.
Naruto's blond hair ruffled playfully by the warm morning breeze made Sasuke want to touch it too. He ran a hand gently though the unruly locks, smiling down at the peacefully dreaming face below him. He ran his fingers down Naruto's cheek, cupping the whiskered skin in his palm.
He wasn't sure how long he held Naruto like that, one hand gently resting on his cheek, the other on his tanned chest. Just feeling the rhythmic rise and fall below his palm, and the steady beat of his heart. He couldn't help the smile that ghosted across his lips as he basked in this gentle reprieve.
Sasuke didn't have many things to be thankful for in his life. His family was gone. He battled a darkness in his heart for most of his life that he thought he'd never be free from. He was still mistrusted by some, feared by others.
It sometimes made him wonder what he did to deserve moments like this. What he did to deserve someone who never doubted him. Who never gave up on him. Someone who gave him only unconditional love and support. A tragic, pitiful and arrogant creature like Sasuke couldn't measure up to a bright, shining and perfect example of the best humanity was capable of. But these feelings didn't create envy and inferiority in him any longer, as they had in the past. This wasn't a competition any longer. He basked in Naruto's influence instead. He used it to help him become a better person too.
Sasuke didn't often allow himself to get emotional. But when blue eyes finally opened, the sunlight painting them the dazzling and sparkling colour of the ocean, Sasuke suddenly felt a little overwhelmed. Naruto raised his head sleepily, and leaned over, brushing his fingers gently across the fringe of Sasuke's hair. The kissed he placed on corner of Sasuke's mouth was gentler than the tickle of a feather. "Good morning," he said in the husky tones of early morning, oblivious to the thoughts that had been running through Sasuke's mind
"Morning," he said simply, as Naruto pulled Sasuke down to lay on his stomach, his head resting in the crook of Naruto's neck, his hand resting lazily on his chest, opalescent against Naruto's golden skin.
Sasuke didn't think he'd done anything to deserve Naruto. But in this quiet, intimate respite, with the judgement of the world on hold, and the scent and warmth of Naruto's skin enveloping him, he swore he'd spend the rest of his life trying to be worthy of these moments.
He closed his eyes and felt himself drift back to sleep.
