asking was enough in a well-mannered world
She could beg the world for her happiness
but it wouldn't yield.
Such a cruel world
they lived in. Such cruel words
were sung upon the breeze.
Pretty faces
hid fanged teeth, scornful tongues
and her tongue was one of the sharp ones,
sharpened, then blunted and scarred.
Pretty manners were just a face.
Her mask. Others masks
like the one she hated,
like the one she loved.
Asking was enough in a well-mannered world
but this wasn't that world.
She could get on her arms and knees and grovel.
She could beg the world for her happiness,
but it wouldn't yield.
