The day was just beginning. Sun slowly rising in the sky, birds chirping their early morning songs. A slight chill in the air made Ellie shiver, making her hug her flannel shirt closer. She forced herself to get up early so she could see the sun rise over the pond, even though she barely slept a wink last night. Nightmares plagued her from getting any rest. She yawned, stretching her arms out as far as they could go. She inched closer to the water, looking at her reflection and seeing little fish swimming just below the surface. She immersed herself in her thoughts. She knew Joel had lied about what happened at the hospital, but she accepted it. She knew that he needed her, just as much as she needed him. She knew he lied because he loved her.
The sound of foot steps shook Ellie from her thoughts.
"Whatchu doin' up so early, kiddo?" Joel asked with a smile, handing Ellie a cup of coffee. Ellie took a sip, savoring the taste. The taste made her remember back to when they returned to Tommy's. Joel was so excited and made a fresh batch of coffee just for Ellie to try. She remembered how his face lit up when she took that first sip. She loved drinking it now. It reminded her of Joel.
"Just watching the sunrise." Ellie said looking up at Joel. She patted the ground beside her, motioning for Joel to sit. Joel kneeled down slowly beside her, making sure not to spill a drop of his precious drink.
"Can't deny that view, huh?" Joel said, nudging her in the side jokingly. She grinned, looking down at her cup.
Ellie fiddled with the handle, picking at pieces of the paint that was coming off.
"Something on your mind?" Joel asked concerned.
"Nah, I'm just taking in the moment" Ellie said with a smile.
Joel nodded his head, bringing his cup up for a drink.
There was a peaceful silence between them. The moment spoke for itself. Ellie glanced up at Joel, who was looking out at the ducks on the pond. He had on her favorite shirt, with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. She smiled to herself.
It was nice to have someone finally stick around in her life. Someone who finally cared enough to stay. She knew that she didn't have to worry about Joel ever leaving her. She knew that she would always be safe, that she would always have someone to count on.
A/N: Just a short little drabble I had to get out of my system. Thanks for reading! :3
