Monster...
That sole word rang in her ears as it left Ursa's lips. Azula fixed her gaze on the floor right in front of her feet with furrowed eyebrows. I'm not a monster, Azula thought. The young Fire Princess started to have doubts about that one statement when certain memories flashed before her eyes. All the pranks she played on Zuko... All the teasing she did on Mai and Ty Lee... And all of the cruel things she would do in the near future... The Firebender squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head, just as her father's words echoed through her mind.
Show no fear. Show no sympathy. Show no emotion at all.
Her mind snapped back to reality as she heard her mother standing up from her seat at the table to leave, after having her morning tea. Azula hid behind a cement pillar as quickly as possible, and waited for the room to resound with her mother's footsteps.
The young prodigy did hear footsteps. But there was something odd about the echoing sound. She expected it to fade, but instead, it grew louder. She was getting closer.
"Azula? What are you doing here?"
Said girl lifted her head and looked up at the woman towering above her. Golden eyes, much like hers, stared back at Azula. The thing different about their eyes is that Ursa's were much softer and filled with emotion. Azula's were cold and void of any feelings.
Ursa frowned.
Azula's mind immediately fabricated an excuse. "I was just heading towards the training area to practice my firebending. Father was going to teach me some new moves today. I have to get there before he gets angry."
Ursa sighed, eyes downcast, wondering why her daughter always seemed to want to keep her distance from everyone, and espeacially from her own mother. Soundlessly and speechlessly, Ursa nodded. Azula walked away, quite hastily, in fact. Ursa raised a slender eyebrow, trying to figure out why Azula was uncharacteristically rushing.
The young mother watched her daughter as she disappeared out of sight.
-After Ursa's disappearence-
Azula never wanted to be a monster. She was simply doing what her father asked of her.
Right?
She wanted power. Power over people. Power over her enemies. But she wouldn't do everything and anything just to gain it.
Right?
She didn't trust anybody. Trusting others will only lead to your own downfall. And like her father always says, trust is for fools.
Right?
She feared nothing and no one. Fear was just an emotion. And emotions were for the weak and foolish.
Right?
She didn't love anyone. Not even her father. She thought of him as her leader or superior. Why didn't she love her father? Because Azula doesn't, and will never, love a single soul on this planet. Moreover, the Princess of the Fire Nation, of all things, doesn't know what is love. But just like fear, it was an emotion. Conclusion? Love is pathetic.
Right?
And all these questions... Were left unanswered...
No one in the entire world is born evil. No one in the entire world is born a monster. But since everyone expected Azula to be hungry for power and have a desire to shed blood, well... Who was Azula to disappoint them?
She would be who everyone wanted her to be. Princess Azula of the Fire Nation is now... Officially...
...A Monster.
