Fatherhood
The look on his face confused Eowyn exceedingly. She had thought Faramir would be happy that he was going to be a father. But his expression and total lack of speech suggested otherwise. His eyes seemed to brighten for a mere second, but now they held only doubt. He stared out onto the gardens of Ithilien, deep in thought.
Eowyn approached him cautiously from behind, tears beginning to form in her eyes. "What is wrong, my love? Are you not happy that we are going to have a child?" Faramir turned to look at his wife, guilt washing over him has he saw her glistening eyes and trembling frame. He took her into his embrace, unsure of how to put his feelings into words. "Eowyn, I couldn't be happier" he said with confidence, "To have a child with you is everything I could wish for. But at the same time I'm very afraid." "Afraid of what?" questioned Eowyn, somewhat calmer then before, "surely nothing will go wrong with my confinement, I will have the best care possible and my friends to help me." But Faramir merely sighed. "As much as I worry about the actual birth, I worry more about will happen after our child comes into the world. Eowyn you know that after the death of my mother, my father was inconsolable. He took that grief and lashed out at both Boromir and me, but mostly me. I never knew why he hated me so, but I did know that it hurt worse then any wound." Here he paused, contemplating the years of hurt he suffered under his father's harsh words. "Eowyn I don't want to be that kind of Father, but I don't know how to do otherwise, what if I become just like him?" Eowyn threw herself fully into Faramir's arms, and whispered the words he needed to hear. "You are not your father; you are a good and kind man. Loving, caring; the people adore you, I adore you, and I know our child will too. You could never hurt your son or daughter; it isn't in you to hurt intentionally." Faramir visibly relaxed, the doubt and worry leaving his body and soul as he allowed her words to soak in. "Besides" she added playfully "Even if you were acting foolishly I would give you a sound beating and remove any defects in your character." Faramir chuckled "Thank You dearest, for helping through my worries, and since I am apparently incapable of hurting others, I will leave it to you to carry out all disciplinary actions when our child is older, a huge relief for me I assure you." Suddenly the world was so full of hope, his inner darkness had finally passed, and Faramir looked forward to his future family with joy and happiness.
