Minerva held back a cough in the cold winter weather. Snow danced around her body and glittered in her raven black hair.
"Curse you Chione."
Minerva muttered under her breath, she wasn't sure how that phrase got into her mouth. She didn't even know who Chione was. Sometimes things like that would slip out of her mouth.
Suddenly bouts of coughing wracked her body. Minerva had been fighting off that cold since the days had turned into the time of dreary ice and snow. How she longed for the endless summer days in the streets of Rome, where she would laugh and play with her father Max. He would sneak out of work at the weather station while Minerva snuck away from her siblings and together they would get ice cream and go watch the clouds.
Now Minerva was stuck in the frozen wasteland known as Illinois. While she knew it wasn't winter the whole time in the Land of Lincoln, it felt like it as she trudged through the snowy sidewalk. Minerva would lift her foot up three feet, and then stick it back into the white devil. Then she would pull up her other foot and stick it back in. Snow slowly invaded her jacket and boots. Minerva was cold and tired. All she wanted to do was get home from school.
The Deus family lived within walking distance of the establishment upon Minerva's insistence. Now she wasn't so sure about her decision. For the child with the highest IQ in her family, she made a very dumb choice. If she hadn't wanted to live so close to school, she could take the bus home and stay nice and warm. The snow was getting thicker and her vision was starting to blur. Minerva's teeth chattered like the bones of a skeleton.
She only made it about five more steps until she collapsed out of exhaustion. Minerva fell upon her knees and felt like she couldn't take one more step. Her mitted hands covered her cherry red ears. She was ready to give up, she couldn't get home, wouldn't get home, wouldn't ever get home. As these thoughts ran through her head a tear trickled down her cheek. It slowly inched down until it reached her chin. Finally the tear fell, another drop of water to add to the snow beneath her. Her hands fell upon her lap.
Suddenly, amongst the silence of the blizzard, Minerva noticed a hoot echoing through the air. A snowy owl glided above her, a brief glimmer of hope in the frozen landscape. It looked down as if it knew her, and then disappeared. Minerva was given a snitch of hope and as quickly as it had come, it had left.
"Stultus es tu odi noctuae!"
Minerva screamed at the wind. She didn't know what she said, but she knew it was bad. She looked down at the ground again in hopelessness where she noticed a small collection of items. There was a golden locket, an owl barrette, and most importantly, a hat with a packet of hand warmers. The owl hadn't been there just to taunt her; it had come with an important delivery. Minerva stuffed the locket and barrette into her pocket and ripped open the pack of hand warmers. She stuffed them in her jacket and immediately her mind started to clear.
Minerva's brain started to focus on the issue at hand. As she put on her green and gold hat with ear flaps, a plan had formulated. She began to create a small shelter out of the snow. It wasn't very hard for her because the snow already reached her waist height. Minerva packed the snow above her head and curled into a ball so she could conserve body heat.
An hour later, Minerva's hand popped out of her icy shelter. She recognized the familiar scream of her sister Venice. Minerva clawed out of her cave and saw the cold sunlight above. She climbed out and looked around at the white world around her. She looked at her sister and waved as if nothing happened. Minerva's eyes focused on the object behind her sister. She couldn't help but let out a gasp. Her house was twenty feet away the entire time.
