This Time
(Sweet Revenge - Hutch)

There you were
lying in a hospital bed
on a white pillow
lay your dark curly haired head

I wanted to touch you
but my hands didn't obey
All I could do
was stare
and think of something to say

I sat down beside you
in silence I prayed
Now it was up to you
all I could do was wait

Starsky, Oh Starsky
why didn't you duck?
why didn't you listen to me?
This time you ran out of luck

I'll never forget how I found you
your body filled with lead
lying on the pavement
This time you came to close to death

It looked like you were sleeping
The kind of sleep that we sleep at night
I just wish that was true
Then I could have simply awakened you
This time it was YOUR fight

I was standing at the sideline
Watching helplessly
This was not the way
it was supposed to be

It had always been 'me and thee'

Now it was you, alone
And me standing here
This time you had to do it
all on your own

Lost I was feeling
Lonely like I'd never been before
I listened to the sounds of the machines
Sounds of your heart beating

And I prayed to God once more

To God I prayed a 1000 prayers
I wished, I begged, and I cried
I was afraid to leave my partner
Afraid to come back and find out he'd died

I felt torn between the call of duty
and my fear of losing you
doing nothing made me go crazy
so I decided what I had to do

I had to catch me a shooter
The one who did this to you
That was a promise
If it would be the last thing that I would ever do

Driven by anger
Driven by pain
On the search for revenge
Was what kept me sane

I tried not to think
About you that much
Kept saying to myself
You have to find who did this, Hutch

When the phone started ringing
My heart skipped a beat
I jumped out of my chair
And raced down the street

I ran down the corridor
Almost out of breath
But I had to be there
To make sure you were not dead
The doctor walked up to me
Told me 'cardiac arrest'
No, that couldn't be true
I felt my heart crumbling in my chest

He's still alive
But not out of the woods yet
He's in a coma
Was what the doctor said

The world started spinning around me
In my ears this awful sound
I couldn't feel my legs anymore
And I almost fell to the floor

I was pushed down in a chair
A glass of water in my trembling hands
I wanted to believe
That it was nothing more than a nightmare

But I knew it was real
Because all I could feel
Was the emptiness inside

Once again
I sat beside you
in silence I prayed
It was up to you
all I could do was wait

When you opened your eyes
You were looking at me
It was like a dream
Such a beautiful sight to see

That day
The good guys had won
The bad guys had lost

But don't you ever stand in the bullet's way
again
