This story is not part of any series I've written. It's a response to a challenge on XANA's Lair.
Takes place a little bit after "The Key."
Alita's POV:
It was nice to have my memory back, for the most part.
There were some bad memories that came back right along with the good. I should be grateful for them, since I wanted them for so long, but…now I will always wonder if I hurt him. I'll always wonder what role I had that night. If I was supposed to save him. If there was something I should have done.
I'll always wonder if Joey blamed me.
"Come on, Alita." Joey called from the back seat of the car. "You said that you'd go to the party tonight."
His brother was driving. I was able to tell they had already been drinking a bit, & it was only 8 pm. They had already taken me to those kind of parties, where people just sit around & get drunk.
I wasn't exactly into them. All I card about was Joey.
"No." I said. "I…changed my mind. I don't want to go out tonight." I said. I should have asked for the keys. Joey's brother had let me drive once before, when I said that he wasn't able to drive.
He let me, even though Joey & I were only 13. He didn't even care that Joey got drunk.
"I'll see you tomorrow, ok?" I asked. He didn't say anything, just closed the door & the car sped away.
"I'm sorry." I said, as if he cold hear me.
I finally reached the light pole. Some body had nailed a little wooden cross on it. According to the news, the car had crashed into it. With my memory back, I can't help but wonder what Joey may have been thinking about when he was killed…& if I was on his mind at all.
I placed the flowers I brought with me next to the light pole.
"Joey…can you hear me?" I whispered, starting to cry.
"I'm so sorry."
I think this might just be the most morbid thing I've ever written.
Any way, the challenge was to write a story using a Code: Lyoko paring that you don't normally write about. Hence the Alita + OC. It was inspired heavily by Sugarland's new single. I'd love to know what you guys think about this…
