He looked at her lifeless body, lying there on the floor, mere feet from where the SWAT team had blown a hole in the wall. He wondered how many seconds late they'd been. He reached down to pick her body up, expecting, somehow, for it to already be cold. He was utterly suprised and confused when he felt her warmth through her sweater. He rolled her over and looked deep into her eyes.
"Why are you still alive?"
"He didn't make me take it."

He just walked away. If a picture was worth a thousand words, then a thousand pictures couldn't describe all he was feeling at that moment. He was confused. That in and of itself confused him even more. He walked into Cuddy's office and made trite conversation. She gushed, however veiled it may have been, about having feelings for him. He'd known that for forever. It wasn't her he was interested in. He'd just walked away from the woman he really wanted to be with. No, girl. Compared to him, she was just a girl. Too young. She was too young. And too complicated. Both of which were things he loved about her. And the very things which kept him from her.

Why was she such a damn martyr? If she'd just left when she'd had the chance, he would've shot the kid and she'd've been out of there. He wouldn't've had to worry about keeping her alive and solving the puzzle. The kid would've been fine. Cuddy would've comped all his medical bills. But she had to come back. She had to be so damn dismissive about her own life. Now who knew what all those drugs had done to her already fragile body. Who knew how many months or years she'd shaved off her already short life span.

Why couldn't she have some sense of self-preservation? And why couldn't she see what was happening right before her eyes: he was falling for her. Hard. And the more he got to know her, the more he fell.
