It's no sin to be devoted to someone else, if such a devotion makes you stronger. Because that love and care gives a reason to walk one step ahead, to become stronger in order to be with the person (or more than one, sometimes) who inspires you to fight on in the first place.
It also depends on who you choose as your mentor figure (or figures). If your heart goes to the wrong ones, who knows what they'll use you for. Fighting against those you love? Manipulating your whole will for their pleasure? Making you kill yourself for them and then act like nothing happened? What else...?
When Hitsugaya finds Hinamori lying in a pool of her own blood, with Aizen and Ichimaru not even looking at her fallen form, he can clearly see that the object of his old friend's devotion had turned such feelings against her in the worst possible way.
