UNINTENTIONAL CRUSH

I smashed my pen down on my desk and began desperately massaging my hand. Ouch! I immediately flinched. I really had to learn how to loosen up my grip while writing. I sighed as I took one last glance over my test. About half way through I'd given up; acknowledging that no amount of review could fix the damage. I rose from my seat and turned to hand in the paper. Laying it before my Sensei, I watched him carefully as he scanned it. My hopes instantly faded with the disapproving shake of his head. He flicked his eyes up to show me just how unamused he truly was and as soon as they flicked back down I couldn't resist sticking my tongue out at him. I also couldn't help but overhear Rin and Ayame's snickers from the back but he was quick to scold them.

"Sorry Sensei, won't happen again!" they apologized. I knew it was risky to act so carelessly around your teacher but, jeez! That Naraku had power over his students like no other. We hadn't even been back to school a full week and he was already testing us! When the last student finally handed in his test (of course it was Inuyasha, that idiot) the teacher rose from his seat.

"Alright class," he addressed us, placing the worksheets he was marking down. "It would seem we have a new student joining us." He headed for the door to welcome the student in. He had made the poor kid wait outside for all of us to finish our tests and Inuyasha took a good half hour longer than the last kid before him. I shot a dirty look his way though he didn't seem to catch it. I followed the direction of his gaze and landed my eyes upon the student. The girl was tall, had beautiful long brown hair running down her back, with a loose hair tie near the bottom holding it all in place, she had a deep brown tint in her eyes, and looked athletic.. She was gorgeous.

"This is Sango Taijiya." The Sensei bluntly introduced before motioning for her to take a seat. She scanned the room and when her eyes landed on the only available seat, she hesitantly took it. Sango sat in the very back of the room towards the left end, right in front of the window. How anime, I thought as I watched her situate herself in the seat right next to mine. Finally seated, she took a quick survey of the area. When she looked my way I sent her a genuine smile. She nodded her head and returned an equally large grin my way. After the bell rang for dismissal I made sure to catch up with her.

Our school was the only mixed one in the area, consisting of demons, humans, and well.. Inuyasha. It was the first high school in Tokyo set up like this and well.. The demons weren't exactly the warmest people around, someone had to warn the girl!

"Hello, I'm Kagome Higurashi!" I introduced myself.

"I'm Sango Taijiya, nice to meet you." she answered. I prepped myself in attempts to guide her through the strange arrangement of our school when she'd motioned her head for me to follow her. Before I could even respond she was off. I still have 10 minutes to get to my next class and it was right beside my locker so I shrugged and chased after her. We made our way up two sets of stairs and down one hallway before she finally turned to me.

"So are you the welcoming comity?" she asked, sticking her tongue out at me.

"I'm only here to warn you of all the things you'll need to avoid to survive here!" I began to laugh but then quickly stopped myself when I realized it wasn't the warmest welcoming I could have offered. She just brushed it off and stopped at what appeared to be her locker, not too far off from mine.

"Don't worry, I've dealt with my fair share of demon." she finally answered.

"Oh you have? I just assumed-"

"That since this was the only school in the city that allows both mortals and demons that no mortals have ever seen a demon before?" she'd cut me off. The girl wasn't wrong, demons were as common as dogs around here...

"So..." I tried again. "Where did you come from? Do you know anyone around here?"

"I've always lived near here actually. I've just been home schooled up until now. I don't know anyone too well but those girls on the other side of you were asked to show me around and even walked me to my first period class, they seemed nice enough," hmm... Ayame and Rin never mentioned her.

"I've got to get to class." she outwardly said, as if dismissing me. I turned away but she stopped me just as quickly.

"Look, I don't really know anyone around here and you're the only person that's willingly approached me. If you want to-"

"Do you want to join me and the girls for lunch today?" I claimed my turn to interrupt. She took a few seconds to consider then gave a slight nod before making her way to her next class.

During break I made my way outside to the lone run down picnic table me and the girls usually had our lunch at. The first day of the ninth grade had proved itself to be quite troublesome for Rin. She had gotten into an argument with Ayames boyfriend, at the time, which led her to throwing her pudding at him. The girl with her horrible aim started a food fight and got banned from the cafeteria. Ayame and her boyfriend were quick to break up which also left her avoiding the place. I found this old picnic table near a dumpster one day in the park and got my old friend Jinenji to haul it to the school on his truck. The principal didn't seem to care seeing as we were staying out of trouble and we've been out here ever since. I had to admit it could use a few touch ups starting with the wobbly leg and broken seating on the opposite end of where we sat.. But it was our special spot and it got the job done. Our cheesy 14 year old selves even went so far as to engrave our names into it our second week.

"Rin!" I called when she finally made her appearance. She sat down and pulled out her lunch from her pail, a chicken ceaser wrap with apple juice and a granola bar on the side. She jammed her straw into her drink and took a big slurp before digging into her wrap.

"Why didn't you tell me about Sango during math?" I interrogated her. She shrugged and gulped down the under-chewed bit of food she still had in her mouth.

"It didn't seem that relevant, plus you were busy freaking over how you were going to fail that math test. By the way how did you end up doing on it anyway?" she giggled, already knowing as well as I did that it was a flop. I sent her a death glare before Ayame finally joined us. Ayame seemed to have bought her lunch today, a big juicy burger with a large side of fries. Her last diet must have failed because she was right back to her usual eating habits. Not like she needed to lose weight or anything anyway. I suddenly noticed Sango behind her with the same thing.

"Move over losers!" Ayame loudly greeted us. I shifted down and took a large sip of my water. Sango quietly squeezed in on the end next to Ayame.

"You're not a vegan anymore?" Rin asked which resulted in me nearly choking.

"Vegan?! Forget that, she can't even go 5 hours without meat!" I joked, though we all know it was true. We always joked around over Ayame's large eating habits but it wasn't like what she ate ever made a difference. That girl was so athletic she burned off the calories before they could even threaten her waste line.

"I so could!" Ayame argued back before taking a large chomp out of her meaty burger. I pulled out the sushi my mom made me this morning and dug in. We continued on chatting and teasing Ayame. Sango seems to be enjoying herself which was a relief. We all warned her of Sensei Naraku's harshness but assured her that as long as she got her work done and didn't distract people from the lessons like me she'd be fine. As the end of lunch neared our previously planned shopping trip came up.

"Ouu, I totally forgot! Sorry Kags, I have track after school all week." Ayame apoligized. I sighed, this was why we made our plans earlier on in the week to assure clashes like these didn't happen.

"How about you, still free?" I turned to Rin, my loyalist companion! No way she'd cancel on me.

"It's just that... I'm already so behind in my classes! It's only the first week back and I'm already piled up to my chin in homework, Kaggie-chan!" she explained.

"It's alright." I shook my head. I was really looking forward to getting my homecoming dress early too, oh well...

"I'm free tomorrow. Being all new and all I don't have anything else ahead of me." Sango chimed in. Hmm, I guess it'd be a great opportunity to bond.. Plus, I did already bring it up in front of her.

"Alright!" I concurred. "Sounds like a plan." We were just about to get up to throw our trash away when the last two guys I'd expect to see approached us. The dumb silver-haired half youkai with the dog ears, Inuyasha. I've known him since middle school and in all this time he hadn't changed one bit. Just a spoiled rotten jerk. As much as I hated to admit it, I did use to have a thing for him but.. It may as well have never happened. I thought he was a different person than what he truly- whatever. It was in the past.

He was with his perverted friend with the dumb low pony tail- Miroku. I've known that boy since kindergarten and if I had a dime for every time I saw him hit on a girl... I'd never dare say it out loud but despite his nauseating ways and friendship with Inuyasha, he was kind of cute. Nonetheless, he was still a pervert who came on to anything in a skirt and there was something about the way he was eyeing Sango which was making me uneasy...
