"Hey Cloud! Look at this!"

The blonde looked up from the pile of paperwork on his desk and turned to face the two children standing proudly just a couple of metres from his desk. Denzel was holding two juggling balls in his hand. Once he saw Cloud's attention on him, he started throwing the balls into the air and catching them. Cloud had to admit that he had talent. Marlene smiled and stepped forward, presenting what looked like a bracelet made of daisys.

"It's for you," she said brightly before they left the room together, chatting and giggling cheerfully. Cloud listened until their voices became faint before he looked down at the gift the child had given him. His fingers traced the shape softly and a faint sigh escaped his lips.

He knew where Marlene would have gotten the flowers, there was only one place nearby where they grew. The abandoned Church in Midgar. Both thoughts of flowers and that Church sent an image of a young brunette woman to the front of his mind, her smile flashing for a second before she disappeared. He sighed again.

Every now and then, he would think of her. Sometimes it was because of simply things that reminded him of her, like flowers, Marlene or even his Avalanche friends coming to visit. Sometimes, it was when he was feeling depressed or lonely. In those moments, thinking of her calmed him and made him happy. She was always good at cheering people up.

He delicately touched the pink ribbon attached to his arm, a ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. He would never be able to forget her. He would never be able to love anyone half as much as he loved her but, every now and then, he would think of her.

That was as good as they could get.
