He looked nothing like Michelangelo's angels. He walked like death across the cold stone floor, grey robes swishing about his ankles and a sullen expression on a dark face. And yet he said he was an angel.

"Not what you expected?" a voice came from him. A hollow, unforgiving voice that made the young man shiver in pain.

When the man didn't answer, the angel spoke again. "Ah, Edmund, you're soul is drenched in sin. Isn't that why you're here?"

Edmund stared around the drab room, his heart pounding in his chest.

"I don't know why I'm here," he said shakily. "The last thing I remember...there was a noise, and Cameron said-"

"He's the reason you're here!" the dark figure swooped down on Edmund. "You disgusting wretch! Didn't you listen!?"

"Listen to what?" Edmund said, pressing his back against the wall, and reaching to his side for a sword that no longed dangled from his belt. "Are you one the King's men?"

"Stupid child, don't you understand!" the dark angel shouted, his voice echoing in the room. "The man you love, do you know where he is?"

"Cameron...where...what have you done to him!?" Edmund cried, lashing out at the man, but his fists only met air. Edmund turned around, his eyes searching the room in vain. "Come back, damn you!"

"I am the darkness in your mind," a voice sang in the shadows. "I am the reason your body breaks, and your breathing stops. I am your nightmares and your dreams, and I am judgement."

"Enough," Edmund said in fear. "Tell me, where am I?"

"Purgatory, awaiting my judgement."

"Purgatory? No, that can't be possible..."

There was a chilling laugh. "Yes, you're dead. And your beloved fell into the flames of Hell for eternity. Now, what do you decide? Will you be foolish, like him, or will you repent?"

"You're lying to me," Edmund hissed. "Are you Satan?"

"By Satan, himself! You would dare to call a Messenger of God the name of the poisonous prince of Hell?"

Edmund felt himself falling suddenly. He hit the ground, his head banging of the stone. He reached to his face with one shaking hand, and he felt warm blood sliding down his forehead.

"Stupid child. You're still a mortal, I could break you with only one word."

The voice was in his head now, Edmund realized as he shut his eyes. A noise startled him, and he covered his ears desperately.

"I'll go to Hell with him," Edmund said, not even hearing his own voice.

A different spirit spoke this time in a deep, immortal sound. "Leave him, Judgement. He made the right choice."

There was laughter again and Edmund waited. Months and years could have passed but he wouldn't have known, since everything was timeless to him. When he finally opened his eyes, there was only light. And Cameron's smiling face.

A/N: Confused? Yeah, me too. Edmund, as you may have already guessed, doesn't live in our time. I think any time from 1400-1700 would fit, but that doesn't really matter. Anyway, I'm not a Christian. I don't have a religion in fact, and I don't intend on getting one sometime soon. Purgatory, I've read, is the place you go after you die to redeem yourself. There was no sin in Edmund loving another, so he went to heaven. I may be wrong about what purgatory is, so if anyone really knows for sure, tell me.

Please review, and you can politely disagree with me. I'm in no mood for flames.
