He couldn't help himself. He wrapped his arms around her as she pressed herself to him. He didn't say anything; there was nothing to be said. He knew her loyalty to Atlantis, to him and he knew she must be struggling with her decision to abstain from missions. He couldn't imagine the weight on her shoulder, nor did he want to – he wanted to take it from her experience it himself, if only to see her smile again.
She sobbed into his chest and he closed his eyes against the empathic pain he himself was feeling and drew her closer to his body, to his warmth, to the comfort he was trying to give her. He sighed into her hair, not caring if anyone saw them. He tucked his head into the crook of her neck, breathing in deeply the scent that he'd come to know. She shuddered in his arms and her grip on his back tightened.
He let her cry.
"It's going to be all right," he whispered into her ear. "I'm here."
Then he pressed his lips to her hairline at her temple, so brief that it almost didn't qualify. Then he felt hers on his clavicle, the subtle kiss that no one would see.
He let her do that, too.
