Now onto the fic!
Connor swam towards the warm bay, hoping to catch some rays of sun before the humans came to the beach. He had told his brother that he was going out for a while, just...not where.
"The beaches can be dangerous," his brother always warned. "You need to keep one eye open around humans."
Connor, however smart, was a bit naïve. He had nearly gotten into many accidents with humans, involving nets, hooks, lures...and his brother had always been there to watch his back.
But not today.
Today Connor wanted to go out on his own, feel free, feel slightly dry sand maybe. Feel the warm sun on his back, feel the wind ruffle his hair and flow through his fins. He wanted to explore.
As soon as he arrived, he looked around quickly for any sight of humans.
Nope!
He smiled brightly, snuggling himself into the sun-warmed sand underneath the shallow bay water. Tiny fish flittered through the clear waters, saying hello to the merman. He wiggled his fingers, the fin on his arms flowing around like seaweed as the fish swam past him. He could hear dolphins splashing in the near distance, listening as they squealed in happiness at each other as they jumped. Connor chuckled softly at the gentle creatures' simple pleasure, sliding himself out of his sunny sand bed to swim closer to them.
There was a soft whirring in the distance, but Connor dismissed it. He wanted to play with the dolphins--they were his favorite animals. He smiled as the dolphins noticed him, meeting him and swirling around him in excitement. He laughed, reaching out his hands and letting them glide along their smooth bodies. He swam down deeper, grabbing a few things off the bottom of the bay--shells, sponges, anything really-- and started tossing them, laughing joyfully when the dolphins brought them back.
All parties involved were easily amused, and having a great time.
Then, suddenly, the dolphins swam away. Fast. Faster then Connor could ever hope to catch up with.
Where were they going? He frowned, sticking out his bottom lip. Why were his new friends leaving? Maybe he should go home...
The soft whirring from before was now a loud rumbling. Was it thunder? He swam up to the surface to see, looking around at the clear skies of the sunny bay. No, then what? It kept getting louder--
He turned around, seeing a motor boat all too late. Propeller blades cut into his tail and arms, shoving him deep underwater and causing his blood to form blue wisps in the water. He sank deeper, hardly able to move due to shock.
He wasn't sure what happened between hitting the sand underneath the boat and laying on the rocks along the shore, but he did know two things...
Being out of water ment coughing all of that water out, and air was much sharper to the lungs. By the time he could breath again, his whole torso was in agony.
And two, he was pretty sure the dolphins had come back to help him get to shallow water.
His lacerations stung in the cold air, suddenly feeling less like sunshine and more like ice now. His breaths were harsh and shallow, lungs burning furiously. He shut his eyes, slipping out of consciousness. His skin felt dry, everything hurt, and worst of all...
He would never see his brother again.
