This was written for a little lyric and pairing request I had on tumblr. The lyric prompt was (shortened) "If you want my body and you think I'm sexy Come on, sugar, let me know If you really need me just reach out and touch me Come on, honey, tell me so He's acting shy looking for an answer Come on, honey, let's spend the night together." Just a quick drabbly piece.
Maura glanced about the bar, sipping her wine silently. The lull in the conversation always came about when they were left alone, Korsak and Frost making their excuses to leave early. They always sat beside one another despite the space on the seat opposite them. Jane's hand brushed against Maura's again, and the caramel blonde's resounding gulp made Jane shiver.
"Maybe we should get going...it's kind of late." Jane licked her lips and raised her glass to fill her mouth with the last remnants of her cold beer. She willed herself to keep her hand steady. The haze from the alcohol was making her hyper aware of Maura's presence, hyper aware of the heat she radiated and the way that she looked in that new dress. At least, that was Jane's excuse- the alcohol, always the alcohol.
"Of course, your mother said that you had plans in the morning, I wouldn't want for you to be late-" Maura set her wine glass on the table, collecting her purse and turning toward Jane as they exited the booth.
"I don't really have any plans, tomorrow's Saturday. I just wanted to sleep in, and that was the only way I could get her to lay off me." Jane smirked, earning a nudge from the smaller woman.
"That wasn't very kind of you, Jane." The M.E. couldn't help the grin that ran across her face, however. Angela could be a tad bit overbearing at times.
"Yeah, well, I'm sure you know what it's like, she lives with you now." Jane walked steadily toward her car, fumbling with her keys as she did so.
"Well, she lives in the guest house, she hardly lives with me. Though she is in my house often..." Maura stared at her own car pensively, as though trying to come to a decision.
"If you need a break...I mean- you wanna spend the night again? It's about time you get a chance to sleep without her busting down your door in the morning." The detective smiled, a hopeful glint in her eye.
"It would be nice to have a few extra hours of rest..." Maura nodded to herself, justifying her actions logically. It would be beneficial to sleep a full eight hours, and then some. As she walked toward Jane's car and sat in the passengers seat, she attempted to ignore the flicker of hope that she and Jane would cuddle as they had the last time she'd spent the night.
They rode in relative silence, the only noise coming from the car and Jane's incessant tapping on the steering wheel. The rhythmic beat lulled Maura into a soft sleep, her head falling gently to the side on the car's headrest.
Jane gently shook her when they reached her apartment.
"We're here, sleepyhead." The whispered words warmed Maura- it wasn't the first time that Jane had used the term of endearment with her, and she secretly loved being addressed like that when Jane woke her.
"I must have nodded off..." She steadied herself as she exited the car, and they shuffled into the apartment, avoiding the nippy weather.
As they settled into bed, Maura turned her back to Jane. The brunette settled against her, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close. Maura relaxed into Jane's body, and their breathing evened as they fell close to sleep.
"Jane...?" Maura whispered tentatively, unsure if the other woman had dozed off.
"Mm?" The detective mumbled sleepily, her grip tightening slightly on the smaller woman.
"I..." She hesitated, swallowing her words instead.
"Goodnight, Jane."
"Goodnight, Maura."
They wouldn't say the words now, not tonight. The words would be spoken, but for now, they would fall asleep with the unspoken words hanging, waiting on their tongues.
