It was the day. Sunshine Petal's 13th birthday. She awoke slowly, grunting quietly. She pranced into the kitchen of her mother's home. Her mother was Rainbow Dash, a gorgeous blue mare with a bright rainbow mane. Her daughter, Sunshine Petal, looked nothing like her. She was pale orange and had a soft light scarlet mane, but just as pretty.
Sunshine Petal always wondered why she looked so different than her mother, and today decided to ask. "Mom, I need to ask you something." she asked in her deep, yet quiet voice. "Yes?" her mother replied, reaching for the cereal box in the cabinet. Sunshine Petal thought again. Did she really want to ask? "Why do we look so different? You ARE my mom, right?" she blurted, without finishing her thought.
Rainbow Dash stood there for a moment and sighed. "I should have told you before, but I guess I'll tell you now." she said, sitting down. The mare began to explain. "I'm not your real mom. She passed away several years ago. You were only a foal when it happened. Your father tried to take care of you, but the grief overwhelmed him. He commited suicide. You were a bit older when your father died, but still to young to remember." she said, pausing often.
Sunshine Petal stared in shock. On the outside, she was stiff a board, but inside, she was melting. Melting, and then fizzing up like shook-up cola, it felt like. She then dropped her head and cried. She looked up again with tear-filled eyes and asked, "Who were they?"
Rainbow Dash sighed again. "Your mother was one of my friends, her name was Fluttershy. She was a Pegasus with a yellow body and pink mane. She died of a terminal illness she caught soon after your birth. Your father was named Big Macintosh, or Big Mac for short. He was a red earth pony with a blonde mane. He killed himself."she replied to her adopted girl.
Sunshine Petal cried some more as questions she's asked all her life suddenly got answers. Her wings were small because she was partially earth pony. She was orange because that was a mix of her parents' colors. She was herself because of her late parents, not Rainbow Dash. She very slowly left the table and went to her room. Sunshine Petal dragged a large suitcase to her bed. She filled it with food, a first aid kit, and other necessities. She was going to run away.
Run away and find something. Something, anything. She waited patiently for her mother to leave to work. After an hour or two, she left. She held the bag over her neck and stood on the porch. It was on a cloud. Sunshine Petal stared down and gulped. She couldn't fly, Rainbow never taught her. Besides, even if she could fly, the small pair of wings she had wouldn't carry a half-grown horse AND a heavy suitcase. She needed another way down.
Yet it seemed like the only way down was jumping. And it was, indeed, it was the only way down. Sunshine petal growled to herself. She looked down and back at the house. 'Okay, it's not far down. Maybe if I flapped my wings it would soften my landing at least a little bit.'she thought to herself. She knew that there was no possible way her plan would work, but she went along with it. She jumped.
